All fighters on weight for UFC on Fox
CHICAGO | Today's UFC return to Chicagoland is official after all 20 fighters on the card successfully made weight Friday.
The official weigh-in event for UFC on Fox: Evans vs. Davis took place downtown at the Chicago Theatre on State Street.
Main event fighters Rashad Evans and Phil Davis each came in at 205 pounds for their light heavyweight bout before engaging in an intense staredown that ultimately was broken apart by UFC president Dana White.
The two were originally scheduled to fight last August, but a Davis injury delayed the fight. Now they finally meet with a guaranteed title shot on the line for Evans with a win, and a possible title shot for Davis if he upsets Evans and looks impressive doing so.
Davis, a Penn State wrestling product who weighed in wearing a Penn State singlet as a message to Evans, a Michigan State wrestling alum who has said Davis' wrestling is "trash."
"Rashad's a good fighter and he always puts on great fights," Davis said. "So I can't wait to test my skills against another great fighter. This is something I'm going to build my career off of."
Davis won a Division I national championship at Penn State in 2008 in the 197-pound division.
"Phil Davis is going to be a good fight and I can't wait to fight him," Evans said. "We said a lot and we're going to see what's going on and see who can back up their words."
The co-main event has major title implications in the UFC's middleweight division. Chael Sonnen and Michael Bisping each weighed in at 185 pounds. The winner will advance to a title fight against Anderson Silva, likely to take place in Silva's home country of Brazil - in a soccer stadium in what the UFC is already anticipating will be the largest MMA event in its history.
Kankakee native and Chicago police officer Mike Russow weighed in at 251 pounds for his heavyweight fight against John-Olav Einemo, who was 253. Their fight takes place on the preliminary card.
UFC on Fox: Evans vs. Davis is sold out, but the preliminary card will air live on Fuel TV at 4 p.m., followed by the three-fight main card on Fox at 7 p.m.
