SCHERERVILLE | So what's the difference between "team" and "school?"

"'Team' represents a combined total of competitors from a school with more than one location," Braulio Corral said. "'School' is a division for competitors from one location."

Corral's Martial Arts, with locations in Schererville and Valparaiso, entered both the Juvenile Team and Juvenile School divisions at the U.S. Grappling Chicago jiu-jitsu tournament held Jan. 26 at Oak Lawn Community Pavilion.

"All our students medaled or placed, and we beat some pretty tough schools," Corral said of the two first-place medals his team and school (Schererville location) won.

"We've added more class time for our younger competitors," Corral said. "They're training more and getting more consistent in their training."

The school has implemented a "CMA Warrior Program" to help defray the registration and travel costs for families entering their children in tournaments.

"We award points for participation in tournaments and how well they do," Corral said. "Families from the top three students after the competition season will be awarded cash prizes.

"We want to motivate students to stay hungry and strive to do well at tournaments."
