MEDARYVILLE | Tom Bell had a lot of competition Saturday night at the Shadyhill Speedway, including Derek Losh, Nick Allen and numerous yellow caution flags.
Despite the challengers, Bell, a veteran Wheatfield racer, captured the 20-lap DIRTcar United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) modified stock car feature race at the quarter-mile dirt oval.
Driving his open-wheel stock car from his inside front row starting position, Bell used the inside groove to slip by Losh for the lead with about five laps to go to take the checkered flag over the challenging Allen, a six-time modified champion at the speedway. Finishing behind Bell and Allen were Jesse Bitterling, Chip Risner, Losh and Devin Wright as a total of eight caution flags slowed the action.
Losh, who started on the outside of the front row of the 24-car feature race field, led the opening laps using the outside lane to hold the top spot. Bell continued to drive the bottom groove, pressing Losh for the lead only to see caution flags stop his pursuit for the lead.
With Bell finally taking over the lead and Allen in second, the final caution flag flew with three laps to go, setting up a battle between Bell and Allen. When the green flag flew for the last time, Bell kept to the bottom groove with Allen using the outside lane for a final last lap challenge, which came up a bit short at the finish line.
“I knew we had something for (Losh), but it was a matter of getting by the cautions,” Bell said. “I figured he would move to the bottom (groove) to take the bottom away from me, but he didn’t. I just took my time and was patient and things worked out the way we hoped for.”
The final three laps to the checkered flag saw Allen, last week’s feature winner, try the outside groove for the lead after pressuring Allen and Losh with some inside moves during the latter part of the event.
“I knew (Allen) was there,” Bell said. “After last week, I was scared to death that he was going to make that big run right there. I just stood on it and here we are.”
For the second week in a row, Jerrad Krick of Earl Park was the winner of the 20-lap main event for UMP stock cars. Travis Wolford was a close second followed by Butch Fisher. The Pure Street division saw 13 cars battle in the division’s 15-lap headliner with David Hurst of Chalmers claiming the victory. Hurst defeated Jim Henson and Jerry Luttrell.
Also a winner a week ago, Monticello’s Skylar Antonelli and his four-cylinder Dodge Neon were winners of the 15-lap feature race for the Teen 4s class. Joey Iliff and Harley Sutton trailed Antonelli at the finish. Another repeat feature winner was Bob Fortner of Georgetown, Ill. Duplicating his opening night performance of last week, Fortner was the winner of the 20-lap I-Mods division feature race, defeating Tim Sullivan and veteran Mike Kingma.
Illiana Motor Speedway: Morning rain showers and cold temperatures expected for the evening caused track officials to cancel Saturday’s paved track stock car racing program at the Schererville speedway.
