SCHERERVILLE | Different race car, same results – Eddie Hoffman winning at Illiana Motor Speedway.
Hoffman, last year’s track champion, scored his third feature win of the season, capturing the 30-lap Schepel Buick GMC headliner for Late Model stock cars at the half-mile paved speedway Saturday night.
With his familiar TK Racing-owned red No. 8s sidelined because of damage, Hoffman brought one of his own cars that he uses at the Grundy County Speedway in Morris, Ill. on Friday nights to Illiana and made off with top honors in his Tony D’Ambrose-prepared, Feece Oil-sponsored Chevrolet Impala. Winning at Grundy on Friday, the veteran Wheaton, Ill. racer scored his second victory in as many nights ahead of Illiana points leader, Paul Shafer Jr. of Portage.
Highland’s Mark Ross Jr., who was the early race leader, was scored third at the checkered flag. However, Ross was disqualified because of a weight violation after a post-race inspection. Mike White was credited with third, followed by Bobby Gash and Shaun Wiltjer of Calumet Township. Last week’s feature winner, D.J. Weltmeyer of Dyer was involved in a crash and did not finish.
New qualifying track record holder, Ryan Moore of Valparaiso was the winner of the 25-lap Turbo Stox main event on Illiana’s quarter-mile track. Moore wheeled his Monte Carlo to his third win of the season over Lowell’s Bobbie Jean Wall and John Senerchia. Earlier in the evening, Moore zipped around the Illiana quarter-mile oval in 17.607 seconds to set a new division qualifying record.
Coming back from a family function in Ohio earlier in the day, Chris King of Kouts posted his sixth straight feature victory in the Legends division. King, the class’ points leader and former two-time titlist, bested early race pacesetter Jacob Melvin and Ben Fidone in the 20-lap event.
Doug Verkaik won his first feature win of the season in Pure Stocks as he took the checkered flag ahead of Ryan Lagestee and Alex Treptow, both feature winners earlier this year. Young Stan Zolodz IV of Hebron was the feature winner again in Bandoleros.
Shadyhill Speedway: Rain washed out Saturday’s scheduled stock car racing program at the Medaryville quarter-mile dirt track. The speedway will host its 13th annual Firecracker 50 for DIRTcar United Midwestern Promoters modified stock cars at 6 p.m. Thursday. A full racing card, plus fireworks, is also scheduled for the night. No racing will take place next Saturday unless Thursday’s program is rained out.
