SCHERERVILLE | With five track championships and numerous feature victories to his credit, Mike White is an experienced stock car racer at Illiana Motor Speedway.
That experience paid off Saturday night as White captured the 30-lap Schepel Buick GMC Super Late Model main event at the local half-mile paved raceway.
Taking the lead from John Nutley on lap 24, White of Monee, kept his Ray Wroblewski-owned Chevrolet Impala SS in front of Portage’s Paul Shafer Jr. to score the victory, taking the checkered flag with a 0.536-second victory margin. Chasing White and Shafer at the finish were Nutley, three-time speedway titlist Jeff Cannon of Kouts, Anthony Danta and Dyer’s Phil Splant.
Nutley, another former track champion in the field, came from his inside front row starting position to grab the lead at the start. White, who started sixth among the 20 feature race cars, moved into second place on lap two with Nutley trying to build a lead. With no yellow caution flags slowing the action, White finally charged by Nutley to lead the final seven laps.
“(Nutley) got out early and I was lucky to get by a couple of guys on the outside (at the start of the race),” White said. “I tried to get into a rhythm and he was a little bit better than me at the point in the race.
"I wasn’t defeated, but his car really looked good early. I decided to be patient and maybe wait for a caution. The caution never came but my car came in at the right time when it looked like his started to loosen up. That was all the difference.”
Ryan Moore of Valparaiso won a wild Turbo Stox main event, which saw only three cars finish the 25-lap distance. Moore and his Monte Carlo bested John Senerchia and Jacob McKown of Hobart. Chris King of Kouts became a two-time feature winner in the Legends division as he won the class’ 20-lap headliner on Illiana’s quarter-mile track. King, a former two-time division champion, finished ahead of Randy Harris and Paul Shafer Sr. of Portage.
Mike Wojcik was the winner of the 15-lap Pure Stocks feature race as he defeated a challenging Alex Treptow at the finish. Ryan Lagestee came home third. Stan Zolodz IV of Hebron continued his domination of the Bandoleros class for young drivers, taking the six lap feature over Griffith’s Cole Sutton and Kenny Myer of Hammond.
Shadyhill Speedway: A couple of Wheatfield racers, Nick Allen and Tom Bell, finished first and second in Saturday night’s 20-lap DIRTcar United Midwestern Promoters modified stock car feature race at the quarter-mile dirt oval in Medaryville. Allen, the defending track champion at the speedway, posted his second win of the season. Bub Patrick, Lynn Johns and Chip Risner rounded out the top five. Other feature winners included Travis Wolford (UMP Stock Cars), Brad DeYoung (I-Mods), Brian Clemans (Pure Streets) and Joey Iliff (Teen 4s).
