SCHERERVILLE | Jeff Cannon had been shut out at Illiana Motor Speedway this season as far as feature victories go until a few weeks ago.
Cannon, the former three-time track champion, now has three victories in a row as the Kouts racer won again Saturday night. He capturing the 30-lap main event for Schepel Buick GMC Late Model Stock Car competitors at the half-mile paved speedway, wheeling his Wayne Govert-owned Chevy Impala SS to the victory.
Cannon was running in third place with 13 laps complete when race leader D.J. Weltmeyer of Dyer and challenger Eddie Hoffman made contact between turns one and two, sending Weltmeyer spinning and both drivers sent to the back of the pack for the restart.
Cannon took full advantage of the restart, using the outside groove as the green flag flew again, getting the jump on Boris Jurkovic, who eventually finished second. John Nutley came home third, followed by division points leader Paul Shafer Jr. of Portage, Anthony Danta and Dyer’s Jack Kalwasinski.
“Some times (it's) better (to be) lucky than good,” Cannon said. “I was right on Hoffman and (Weltmeyer and Hoffman) got together. Boris (Jurkovic) got into me real hard when D.J. and Hoffman touched. It probably messed up his front end a little bit. From the mid part of the race, we were kind of cruising.”
Five-time track titlist Bill Serviss of Posen, Ill., got back on the winning track as he claimed his first feature of the season, taking top honors in the 25-lap Turbo Stox feature on Illiana’s quarter-mile track. Serviss and his Monte Carlo defeated Jacob McKown of Hobart and Griffith’s Matt Arvia.
Chris King of Kouts continued his almost unbeatable pattern in Legends division feature action, making off with his 10th feature win of 2013. King, division titlist in 2010 and 2008, took the checkered flag ahead of Andrea Hans and Paul Shafer Sr. of Portage.
Nicholas Joyner, another first-time champ this year, won the 15-lap Pure Stocks headliner, which called for “second across the line wins.” Jim Gross was second and Tyler Wheaton third. For the second week in a row, Kenny Myer of Hammond beat Griffith’s Cole Sutton in the Bandoleros feature.
Shadyhill Speedway: Nick Allen of Wheatfield won again at the Medaryville quarter-mile dirt track on Saturday night. Allen posted his sixth feature win of the season in DIRTcar United Midwestern Promoters (UMP) Modified Stock Car competition. Allen defeated Star City’s Jesse Bitterling and Devin Wright of Rensselaer in the 20-lap race. David Hurst of Chalmers had a double feature win night as he won main events in both the UMP Stock Cars and Pure Streets divisions. Winless since early May, Bob Fortner of Georgetown, Ill., won the 20-lap I-Mod class feature, while division points leader Joey Iliff of Rensselaer came home the winner in the Teen 4s division.
