LITTLE 500 WOMEN'S RACE TODAY: Kelsey Phillips (Chesterton) and defending champion Delta Gamma are seeded fourth in the Little 500 women's cycling race which begins at 3 p.m. today at Indiana's Bill Armstrong Stadium.
Other local riders include Wing it Cycling's Melissa Moeller (Valparaiso), Gamma Phi Beta's Jenna Norgaard (Chesterton), Melanzana's Rose Mullaney (Bishop Noll), Air Force Cycling's Jen Hill (Hobart), Last Chance's Elizabeth Littlejohn (Portage) and Lindsey Conger (Munster), IU Army Cycling's Katherine Smailis (Highland) and Alpha Delta Pi's Michelle Tebout (Valparaiso).
The men's race will be at 1 p.m. Saturday. Eric Anderson (Munster) and Beta Theta Pi are the top seed. Other local riders include Kappa Sigma's Greg Nowak (Valparaiso), Forest's Neal Ward (Crown Point), Collins Buccaneeers' Max Mills (Dyer), Delta Upsilon's Austin Venhuizen (St. John) and Delta Chi's Francisco Borrayo (Chicago Heights).
BEARS OPEN TRESTMAN ERA AT HOME: The Bears will open the Marc Trestman era with a pair of home games.
The Bears will host Cincinnati on Sept. 8 and Minnesota the following week.
The schedule released Thursday also includes a Thursday night game against the New York Giants at Soldier Field on Oct. 10 and Monday night matchups at Green Bay on Nov. 4 and against Dallas at home on Dec. 9. The Bears also host Baltimore on Nov. 17 and the Packers on Dec. 29.
Chicago is off on Oct. 27.
MANNING'S RETURN HEADLINES COLTS' SCHEDULE: The Colts and Peyton Manning will play on the same field in October. They just won't share the same sideline.
Manning and the Denver Broncos will play in Indy on Oct. 20, a Sunday night game that's the feature attraction on the Colts' 2013 schedule released Thursday night.
Indy will have three other prime-time games this season: Oct. 14 at San Diego, Nov. 3 at Houston and Nov. 14 at Tennessee.
The Colts open the season with home games Sept. 8 against Oakland and Sept. 15 against Miami before traveling to NFC champion San Francisco on Sept. 22 in quarterback Andrew Luck's return to the Bay area.
DENO COMMITS TO PURDUE CALUMET: Cassidy Deno (Benton Central) has committed to Purdue Calumet. The 5-foot-11 guard wrapped up a storied prep career this winter with 1,228 career points.
MONTEIRO COMMITS TO PURDUE CALUMET: Purdue Calumet coach James Drzewiecki recently added Rio De Janeiro native Nicolau Monteiro to his 2013 recruiting class. The 5-foot-8 striker is a well-traveled individual, having played a year of high school soccer in Colorado, a season with German club Hertha Zehlendorf 03’s under-19 team and stints in the CFZ do Rio SE and São Cristovão Futebol Clube youth academies. He led Hertha 03 with 21 goals, helping the squad to a second-place finish in the Berlin-Liga.
NORTH NEWTON HIGH SCHOOL CHALLENGE GAME CANCELED: North Newton's High School Challenge game with South Newton has been canceled.
The remainder of the schedule is still intact for U.S. Steel Yard. Lew Wallace plays Roosevelt at 4:30 p.m. today, while E.C. Central and Marquette follow at 7:30.
Michigan City will play Boone Grove at 1 p.m. Saturday; Chesterton will play Griffith at 4, and Victory Christian will meet Calumet Christian at 7.
LAPORTE'S JAMES HONORED: LaPorte assistant coach Bob James has been named the 2013 recipient of the Indiana Football Coaches Association's Tom Kelly Memorial Technology Award.
The honor goes to a coach who has used technology to support the IFCA and region activities. James will be recognized at the North-South All-Star Game on July 19 at North Central High School in Indianapolis.
