Indoor soccer league signups start Monday

PORTAGE | The Forrest L. Rhode Boys and Girls Club will hold registration for its fall indoor soccer program from 2:30 to 8 p.m. Monday through Wednesday. The league will run Sept. 13-Nov. 19. Biddy soccer is open to children ages 5-7. Games will take place on Friday nights. The league fee is $20. Junior soccer is open to ages 8-10. The fee is $25. Practices will run on Mondays or Tuesdays. Games will be played on Thursday nights. Senior soccer is open to ages 11-13. The fee is $25. Practices will be held on Mondays or Tuesdays. VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso unit of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Porter County has started signups for its fall instructional program. Signups will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday as well as Sept. 7 and 10. Signups will also run from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday as well as Sept. 8-9. Ages 5-7 play on Friday nights. The league fee is $20. Ages 8-9 and 10-11 will play on Saturdays. The fee is $30. Ages 12-14 will play on Wednesday nights. The fee is $35. All players must be club members. A one-year fee is $25. Girls running program starts Sept. 20

PORTAGE | The Portage Twp. YMCA is offering an eight-week 5K running program for girls ages 10-14 from Sept. 20-Nov. 4. Runners will meet from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Runners will take part in a 5K on Oct. 30. Fees are $35 for primary plus members, $50 for primary members and $75 for non-members. Duneland Flyers 11U baseball tryouts slated

BURNS HARBOR | The Duneland Flyers 11-and-under baseball team will hold tryouts for the 2011 season from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 11 at Lakeland Park. Gymnastics classes at VHS

VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso Gymnastics Club will offer general classes, training team and competitive team options at the high school this fall.

General classes are for students ages 5 and older. Registration is from 5:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday in the fieldhouse. The seven-class sessions will take place at 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Tuesdays, beginning Sept. 7. The fee is $35.

Training team is a beginning Level 3 competitive squad for girls ages 5 and older. Enroll by Monday. Practices will run from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Tuesday and run through November. Competition at intrasquad and local meets is available.

Gymnasts interested in Level 4 through optional competition may try out for the competitive team. Practices are three to four times a week throughout the school year and five times a week in the summer. For details, call (219) 464-8018.

 

Horizon GymJam classes available

PORTAGE | Eight-week Taekwondo classes will be offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Tuesday in the Blue Spruce Room at Woodland Park. Ages 3-5 will meet from 4 to 4:30 p.m.; ages 6-12 will meet from 4:40 to 5:30, and ages 13 and older will meet from 5:40 to 6:30. Cost is $50 per resident for ages 3-5, $55 for non-residents. VALPARAISO | A free self-defense seminar will be offered Sept. 4 by the Valpo ATA Black Belt Academy, 52 Marks Road, Suite 2. MERRILLVILLE | The Fieldhouse-Merrillville will be the site for two basketball programs, with each running on Mondays or Wednesdays.

Little Dribblers is open to children ages preschool through second grade. The camp will run Sept. 13-Oct. 27. Preschool and kindergarten children will meet from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. or 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. First- and second-graders will meet from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. or 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The cost is $75.

The Hoops Academy is open to those in third grade through high school. The camp will run Wednesday through Oct. 13. Grades 3-5 will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., grades 6-8 will meet from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. and those in high school will meet from 8 to 9 p.m. The cost is $85. VU football ticket pricing announced

VALPARAISO | Single-game tickets are $10 for Crusader football games. Children ages 10 and under are admitted free.

Specials are available for the opener against St. Joseph's at 7 p.m. Sept. 18. In addition to the football game that day, fans can use the same ticket for the Crusader volleyball match against Butler at 4 p.m. at the Athletics-Recreation Center. A family package, which includes four tickets to both the volleyball match and football game as well as four food tickets, is available for $30. Individual game tickets bought in advance are $5 and include admission to both games as well.

Tickets can be purchased at the Valparaiso University athletic ticket office, located in the Athletics-Recreation Center, or by phone at (219) 464-5233. Ticket office hours are from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

 

VHS sports passes on sale

Hospice Hustle bike ride set for Sept. 26

CROWN POINT | Registration is open for the Hospice Hustle, a non-competitive bike ride to benefit Hospice of the Calumet Area. Participants may select one of two routes, traveling 25 or 62 miles through southern Lake County. Both routes begin and end at the Lake County Fairgrounds in Crown Point. Cyclists may check in starting at 7 a.m. Sept. 26. Riding begins from 8 to 10 a.m.

Entry fee is $25, $30 the day of the event. Cyclists are encouraged to solicit pledges for each mile ridden. Registration brochures may be downloaded at www.hospicecalumet.org.

Puckerface 5K Sept. 11 in Highland
