HAMMOND | Tommy McDermott hit a walk-off RBI single in the fourth inning to end the Hammond Optimist's final pool-play game in the fourth inning against East Boise, Idaho.

The win gave the host Bulldogs the National Division title and a first-round bye in the single-elimination bracket championship round.

Daniel Villarreal was 3-for-3 with a double, home run and four RBIs for the Bulldogs (3-1), who will play the winner today's Crown Point-Grand Forks, N.D., game at 8 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

Randall Perrin had a two-run triple, and Rigo Martinez struck out seven while going the four-inning distance for Hammond Optimist.

Matt Stefanic was 2-for-2 with a double for East Boise (1-3). — John Burbridge
