EAST CHICAGO | Though the East Chicago Sports Hall of Fame was officially completed several years ago, there's always room for improvement.
"This was made possible from a generous grant for the Foundation of East Chicago," said Lake County attorney and HOF counsel John Dull, in reference to several additions to the HOF and the adjacent John D. Baratto Athletic Center, both within E.C. Central High School.
Among these are a series of gym-rafter-hanging banners commemorating state champion and finalist teams at E.C. Central.
Despite all the accolades it has received at the state and national levels, co-founder Jim Platis considers the HOF incomplete without East Chicago Washington's 1960 boys basketball state championship trophy.
"It's the only state championship trophy that's missing," said Platis, who has been denied repeated requests for it to be donated to the HOF.
"It doesn't belong to one person ... it belongs to the people of East Chicago," Platis said. "That's why it needs to be here for everyone to see."
