Men's basketball

PURDUE BEATS MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE: Terone Johnson scored 14 points to help Purdue defeat Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-6) 79-50 on Tuesday night.

Errick Peck scored nine points, and A.J. Hammons had eight points and seven rebounds for the Boilermakers (9-3), who improved to 8-0 at Mackey Arena this season. The Boilermakers have won four of five heading into their final nonconference game Sunday at West Virginia.

DAWSON HELPS MICHIGAN STATE ROUT NORTH FLORIDA: Adreian Payne scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half and fifth-ranked Michigan State rolled to a 78-48 victory over North Florida (5-7).

Branden Dawson (Lew Wallace) added 12 points for the Spartans (9-1).

CAL COLLEGE FALLS IN OT: Despite 27 points from Robert Jackson and 22 points from Marcus Moody, Calumet College lost to Indiana South Bend 93-90 in overtime. Chris Diehl added 12 points for the Crimson Wave (7-4, 1-3 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference).

LATE 3 HELPS BULLDOGS TO VICTORY: Lavell Boyd hit a 3-pointer with 12 seconds remaining to propel South Suburban College to a 62-59 win over Lake Michigan College.

Antonio Levy added 17 points for the Bulldogs, and Boyd finished with 13 off the bench. Jalen Brown chipped in 12 for South Suburban (12-2).

IUN FALLS ON THE ROAD: Sophomore Cody Artuso was the only Indiana Northwest player to reach double digits in an 88-52 loss at Robert Morris. Artuso paced the RedHawks (3-9) with 12 points.

UIC BEATS PURDUE CALUMET: Jordan Harks scored 15 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, leading five players in double-figure scoring to help Illinois-Chicago (4-6) to a comfortable 88-61 win over Purdue Calumet. Pat Birt and Marc Brown contributed 14 and 13 points, respectively, while Jake Wiegand added 12 off the bench and Hayden Humes (Valparaiso) tossed in 10 points.

Kaspars Brencans led the Peregrines with 16 points, with Roddy Richardson adding 14.

The game was the first meeting between the schools since the 1974-75 season. The Flames lead the series 9-2.

Women's basketball

NO. 7 LOUISVILLE RUNS PAST BALL STATE: Shoni Schimmel had 17 points as No. 7 Louisville (11-1) overwhelmed Ball State 105-67 Tuesday night.

Jill Morrison had 17 points, and Nathalie Fontaine finished with 14 to lead Ball State (3-6). Ball State was trying to upset its first ranked opponent since a stunning win over Tennessee in the 2009 NCAA tournament.

WAVE FALL TO IUSB: Calumet College fell behind early to Indiana South Bend before dropping their third CCAC game 68-64.

Dominique Edwards scored 22 points with 10 rebounds for the Crimson Wave (6-6, 0-3), and Crystal Daniels poured in 15 points.

PUC ROUTS ST. FRANCIS: Purdue Calumet raced to a 44-26 halftime lead and cruised to an 89-69 win over visiting St. Francis (Ill.).

Cassidy Deno led the rout with 18 points. Stephanie Balon added 14, Madison Gervais 12 to go with 15 rebounds, and Quinci Eller chipped in 10 points for the Peregrines (9-3, 4-0 CCAC).

Pro hockey

HAWKS SINK PREDATORS: Duncan Keith scored a goal and added an assist to lead the Blackhawks to a 3-1 win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. Patrick Kane and Nick Leddy also scored for Chicago, which has won five of six.

Pro baseball

CUBS, VERAS NEAR DEAL: A person familiar with the situation says the Cubs and reliever Jose Veras were closing in on a $4 million, one-year contract.

The person spoke Tuesday on the condition of anonymity because the deal with the 33-year-old right-hander was pending a physical.

Veras would get $3.85 million next season, and the Cubs have a $5.5 million option for 2014 with a $150,000 buyout.

Veras was 0-5 with a 3.02 ERA in 67 games last season for the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers, who acquired him on July 29.

College football

MIZGATE NAMED AFCA ALL-AMERICAN: Aurora University senior tight end and T.F. South grad Ryan Mizgate was named a 2013 Division III All-American by the American Football Coaches Association.

In addition to his AFCA All-American honor, Mizgate was named a 2013 second-team All-American by Beyond Sports Network, a d3football.com third-team All-Region tight end and Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference first-team all-conference. In his final season with the Spartans, Mizgate set an AU single-season record with 50 catches for 817 yards and seven touchdowns.
