Winners crowned at JDRF Junior Open
VALPARAISO | Five youths won titles at the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's Junior Open on July 27 at The Course at Aberdeen. Adam Cox and Brad Bobrowski each carded 81s in the boys 15-and-older division, and Cox won the title on the first playoff hole. Brian Brzycki captured the 14-and-under crown with an 89. Harley Dubsky won the girls 15-and-older title with a 76, while Jennifer Gough won the 14-and-under division with an 88. In nine-hole play, 8-year-old Wynne Aldrich shot a 57 for the victory.
Creekside Classic winners announced
VALPARAISO | More than 30 junior golfers age 12 and under participated in the Creekside Classic For Kids Skills competition July 21 at Creekside Golf Course and Training Center.
Juniors competed in six skill areas with awards going to the age group winners.
8-and-under: Long drive -- John Hofer; Chip and sand -- Gabe Schmaltz; Pitch, putt and three-hole -- Wynne Aldrich.
9-10: Long drive -- Riley Woodward; Chip and pitch -- Reed Smith; Sand -- Nathan Galipeau; Putt -- Madison Simms; Three-Hole -- Emma Cox.
11-12: Long drive -- Nick Wolf; Chip -- Eric Lewis; Pitch and three-hole -- Alexis Miestowski; Sand -- Adam Odar; Putt -- Jack McQuestion.
The afternoon 12-hole scramble, which consisted of two adults and two juniors in each foursome, was won by Team Steeple Gallery of St. John with a score of 38. The team included juniors Alexis Miestowski and Kara Blair with Sam Miestowski and Mat Blair. The runners-up with a 39 was Team Rodenbarger, pairing juniors Alex Pancek and Bobby Jacobs with Jerry Rodenbarger and Larry Wackowski. Third place went to Team Leeth, made up of juniors Logan Krantz and Harley Dubsky, golfing with Todd and Tyler Leeth.
The Classic for Kids benefits the Valpo Parks Foundation and The First Tee Valparaiso junior golf initiative.
Purdue Wrestling Golf Outing at SummerTree

Creekside golf programs available in August
VALPARAISO | Golf programs for both adults and children will be available in August at Creekside Golf and Training Center.
Swing classes run from 3 to 5 p.m. today (putting and irons) as well as from 8 to 10 a.m. Friday (course management), Aug. 13 (chipping and woods) and Aug. 20 (putting and irons). Class size is limited to six. A three-hole scramble follows each clinic. Cost is $50 per session. Monday morning clinics will run from 8 to 9 a.m. Monday (playing the ball from uneven lies), Aug. 15 (putter savvy), Aug. 22 (power of triangles in the swing) and Aug. 29 (understanding and eliminating the slice). Cost is $15. Adult snap shots will run from 2 to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 (bunkers: greenside and fairway) and Aug. 24 (swing path drills). Cost is $15.
Lil' Tigers is open to children ages 3 to 5. It will run from 1 to 1:45 p.m. every Saturday. Cost is $15 a class. An accompanying adult plays for free. Linksters is open to ages 6 to 8 and will run from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays as well as from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturdays. Cost is $15 per class. Target classes are for ages 9 to 11. They will run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $30 a class. The Master Academy is open to ages 12 and older and will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Aug. 11. Cost $90 per class. First Tee is open to anyone ages 6 to 13. The will classes run from 2 to 4 p.m. every Saturday through Sept. 3. Cost is $100 for the entire session or $20 per class. The LPGA Girls Golf Club is open to ages 7 to 17. The next event will run from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 17. Golf classes for home-schooled students ages 7 to 13 will run from 2 to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, beginning Aug. 23.
Ping Demo Day will run from noon to 4 p.m. Sept. 4.

Joe Fletcher Memorial Golf Outing Saturday
LANSING | The annual Joe Fletcher Memorial Golf Outing will be held at the Lansing Country Club on Saturday. A shotgun start is at noon. Cost is $50 with proceeds going to the Jace Fletcher College Trust Fund and the Hammond Chiefs baseball club. An after-golf party, including food and beverages, will follow the outing. DK Classic set for Sept. 11

The event is a fundraiser for former Valpo athlete Darren Kahl, who suffered a spinal injury in 2008. Proceeds are used for rehabilitation expenses as well as supplies and adaptive equipment that help Kahl perform activities of daily living.
