Blackbirds stopped short of MJHL final

The Illiana Blackbirds junior hockey team had its season ended over the weekend due do consecutive losses to the Wisconsin Dell Ducks in the Final Four round of the Minnesota Junior Hockey League playoffs in Oregon, Wis.

In the first game on Friday, Illiana got off to a great start scoring two goals for a 2-0 lead a little more than three minutes into the game. They were scored by Hobart resident Joe Orosz (Jordan Keller and Jakob Smith assisting) and Nick Riscossa (Griffin Mason assisting).

But the Ducks went on to score four unanswered goals to win 4-2 before shutting out the Blackbirds 3-0 on Saturday.

Torbica to be honored at Chicago Blackhawks game

Munster 12-year-old hockey player Evan Torbica, who scored 103 goals in 26 games while playing for the Midwest Blackbirds Pee Wee 2 in-house team, will be recognized during an on-ice ceremony during the Chicago Blackhawks' April 3 home game against Minnesota Wild at the United Center.

Evan was selected at the Chicago Blackhawks/BMO Harris Bank "Player of the Month."

Lansing Swim Organization holding swim lessons

LANSING | The Lansing Swim Organization is hosting swim lessons for ages 5-13 at the T.F. South pool, 186th Burnham. Session 1 is from 6 to 6:45 p.m. April 7, 9, 10 and 11; Session 2 is from 6 to 6:45 p.m. April 14, 16, 17 and 18. Registration is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the pool. Cost is $45 per child.

University Park Softball League offering 16-inch softball

UNIVERSITY PARK | The University Park Men's Softball League will be offering a 16-inch class "A" softball league this spring and summer. Cost is $500 per team -- $22 will be added to teams not registered by ASA. League champion will receive an automatic bid to a national tournament in Wheeling, Ill. Registration deadline is May 2. All games will be played on Sunday afternoons and evenings.

Crete Bulldogs holding football and cheerleading sign-ups

Cheerleaders must in grades 1-8 in fall 2014.  Football players must be at least 6 years old and entering first grade by Sept. 1, 2014, and no older than 15 years old by Dec. 1, 2014. Players may not be in high school in fall 2014.
