Hammond Optimist Youth Sports hosting World Series

HAMMOND | Hammond Optimist Youth Sports is hosting the 2013 Cal Ripken 12U World Series, Aug. 9-16 at the HOYS Complex located at Columbia Avenue and River Drive. The HOYS Bulldogs as well as the Northern Indiana champions will be two of the 10 teams participating in the series. Pro badminton action at Whiting Community Center

WHITING | The Indiana Racquets will take on the Seattle Smash in National Badminton League action 2 p.m. July 5 at Whiting Community Center, 1938 Clark St. The dual will feature two-time Olympian and five-time Czech champion Petr Koukal, three-time Dutch champion Eric Pang, and 2011 U.S. National champion Ilian Perez. Admission is free.

The NBL Pro-Am will take place a 10 a.m. July 5 at the center. It is limited to eight amateurs, who will play a round-robin doubles tournament with a blind-drawn pro. Entry fee is $100.

On July 1-3, Pang will hold a three-day badminton camp for juniors and adults. It will be held from 2 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 9-13, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. for ages 14-18, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for adults. Cost is $75 per person.

E'Twaun Moore Basketball Camp at E.C. Central

EAST CHICAGO | The E'Twaun Moore Basketball Camp for boys and girls in grades 4-9 will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 28-29 at East Chicago Central High School, 1100 W. Columbus Drive. Cost is $40 for East Chicago residents (must show proof of residency -- i.e. school ID or report card); $60 for non-residents. Grand Prix of Tennis in Northwest Indiana

MERRILLVILLE | The Northwest Indiana Grand Prix of Tennis will consist of five junior and adult tournaments throughout the summer and fall. Divisions include boys' 18, 16, 14, 12 singles; girls' 18, 16, 14, 12 singles; men's singles; men's 45 singles; women's singles; boys' doubles; girls doubles; men's doubles; women's doubles; and mixed doubles. Tourney dates the State Games of Indiana June 29-30 at Andrean High School, the Highland Open July 20-21 at Highland High School, the Northwest Indiana Summer Grand Prix Aug. 17-18 at a site to be determined, the Whiting Open Sept. 21-22 at Piatek Tennis Courts; and the Grand Prix Finals Oct. 12-13 at a site do be determined.

Each tourney, five points will be awarded for every match won (not including walkovers), 20 points for winning a final, 10 points for losing a final and five points for losing a semifinal. Top eight point winners in each division will qualify for the Grand Prix Finals.

Finn Passing Academy at Andrean

MERRILLVILLE | The fourth annual Finn Passing Academy, conducted by former Andrean quarterbacks Billy, Bobby and Tommy Finn, will be held July 15-17 at Andrean High School, 5959 Broadway.

The academy, open to students entering grades 5-9 in August, runs daily from 9 a.m. to noon. It will focus on the essentials needed to run a successful passing game, as well as the leadership skills that great quarterbacks possess, qualities all three of the Finns were known for during their careers.

Participants are asked to wear shorts or sweats, a t-shirt and football shoes. They should also bring a mouthpiece, water bottle and tennis shoes in case the weather forces a move indoors. Lansing Old Timers holding baseball tournament

LANSING | The Lansing Old Timers will host a baseball tournament for ages 8U, 9U and 11U from July 18 to July 23 at the Lansing Old Timers Complex, 16500 Chicago Ave. In-house all-star teams and part-time travel teams (less than 25 games together) are eligible -- no metro or full-time travel teams.
