Hammond Outdoor Show lures in the fans
The 28th Annual Hammond Outdoor Sports Show has come and gone, but not before thousands traveled up and down the aisles of exhibitors at the Jean Sheperd Community Center this past weekend.
With spring just around the corner, outdoors enthusiasts were able to pick up the latest in hunting and fishing gear, learn new techniques, talk with a conservation organization, book a charter, look over some boats or just gather ideas for what lies ahead this year.
"It was a pretty good show," said organizer Mark Narantic. "We've had some good feedback from the vendors and visitors. We're pleased, and I think that most of the people were too."
One exhibitor that felt the show was a success was Doug Richardson of Arctic Spinners. This Toledo, Ohio, based company is the maker of fishing lures including spinners and perch spreaders.
"The weekend was really, really good for me," Richardson said. "I haven't worked the Hammond show for a couple of years. I decided to do it again because of the turnout at another area show earlier in the month. This show was amazingly even better for me. (Saturday) was tremendous.
"Without a doubt, I will be back again next year. I love to see the others from this industry at these shows. It is really the only opportunity that we have to get together. I think the show goers like to support the small independent guys. They like the made in the USA aspect."
The vast schedules of outdoors seminars were attended by men, women and children, as were the minnow races. The trout pond found eager, young fishermen, some going after the evasive trout a second and even third time.
The outdoor-themed chainsaw wood carvings of Griffith-based Sidney Spoor the Woodlander were also present as his tent was situated just outside of the show, in view of the building's dining area.
"It is a nice show," said Spoor. "It's always a nice show. I get a lot of interest and curiosity throughout the show as I start carving. I don't have a set schedule, I just start up and people gather around. Being outside the dining area is good for people too; they can stand inside and still see the demonstration."
