Portage tennis meeting Thursday

Tennis programs offered at VHS

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso High School's tennis courts will be the site for open hitting sessions for prospective players and a middle school tennis program. Open-hitting sessions will run from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, except the week of July 4. Middle school tennis will run from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Valpo University offers basketball camps

VALPARAISO | Valparaiso University's men's and women's basketball teams will host youth camps this summer.

The women's team will offer a two-day team shootout camp Thursday and Friday for high school and junior varsity squads. The cost is $350 for one day, $500 for two days.

The men's team will run a mini-camp for children aged 5 to 7 from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through June 27. The cost is $115. The Valpo Basketball School will run from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through June 27 and is for players aged 8 to 14. The cost is $165. The Valpo Basketball Academy is for players aged 8 to 14 and will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 29 through Aug. 2. The cost is $295.

17th annual Indian Open Friday

Grand Prix of Tennis in Northwest Indiana

MERRILLVILLE | The Northwest Indiana Grand Prix of Tennis will consist of five junior and adult tournaments this summer and fall. Divisions include boys 18, 16, 14, 12 singles; girls 18, 16, 14, 12 singles; men's singles; men's 45 singles; women's singles; boys doubles; girls doubles; men's doubles; women's doubles, and mixed doubles. Tourney dates are the State Games of Indiana June 29 and 30 at Andrean High School, the Highland Open July 20 and 21 at Highland High School, the Northwest Indiana Summer Grand Prix Aug. 17 and 18 at a site to be determined, the Whiting Open Sept. 21 and 22 at Piatek Tennis Courts and the Grand Prix Finals Oct. 12 and 13 at a site do be determined.

At each tourney, five points will be awarded for every match won, 20 points for winning a final, 10 points for losing a final and five points for losing a semifinal. The top eight point winners in each division will qualify for the Grand Prix Finals.

Entry fee for each tourney is $10 per singles and doubles team, plus one unopened container of tennis balls. Containers will be sold on-site for $5 per can. Registration deadline is the Wednesday before each tourney. To register, go to www.tennis219.com.

VU volleyball team to host summer camps

VALPARAISO | The Valparaiso University women's volleyball team will host two summer camps. The annual summer camp will run July 8 to 11 at the Athletics-Recreation Center. The camp is open to children in grades three to 12. Cost is $420 for overnight campers, $335 for commuters.

The program will also be part of a combination volleyball/soccer camp from Aug. 5 to 7. The camp is open for children in grades kindergarten through eight. Finn Passing Academy at Andrean

MERRILLVILLE | The fourth annual Finn Passing Academy, conducted by former Andrean quarterbacks Billy, Bobby and Tommy Finn, will be held July 15 to 17 at Andrean High School. The academy, open to students entering grades five to nine in August, will run daily from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants are asked to wear shorts or sweats, a T-shirt and football shoes.
