Wrestling league offered for elementary students

PORTAGE | Portage students in fifth grade or younger who wish to participate in an elementary school wrestling league should contact coach Leroy Vega at leroy@voroil.com. Practices will be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting next week in the high school wrestling room. Groups will be divided into beginners (5:30 to 6:30 p.m.) and advanced (6:30 to 7:45). There is no fee.

 

Olympic gold medalist featured at softball clinic

WESTVILLE | Olympic gold medalist Michelle Venturella, head softball coach at UIC, will join Lowell High School coach Pete Iussig and Calumet College coach Stephanie Zimney for a softball clinic from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 24 at Westville High School. PORTAGE | The Portage Park Department will sponsor an indoor soccer academy for boys and girls aged 7 to 14 from Nov. 4 to Dec. 22 in Oakwood Hall at Woodland Park. Training days will be Monday and Tuesday and match play will be Sunday. Registration will be taken at the Woodland Park Office from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Valparaiso University softball program's 14U/12U team camps will be held Oct. 19 and 20 at Imagination Glen Park in Portage. Teams are guaranteed at least four games. Portage dodgeball sign-ups begin Oct. 21

PORTAGE | Registration for the Portage Park Department's youth and coed adult dodgeball leagues runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Oct. 21 through Nov. 1, at the park office. The youth fee (children aged 7 to 14) is $25 for Portage residents, $35 for non-residents. The coed team cost is $150. Games run Nov. 7 through Dec. 26. Youth games are 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. Manda's Race takes place Oct. 26

CHESTERTON | The fifth annual Manda's Race 5K run and non-competitive walk will take place at 9 a.m. Oct. 26 at Westchester Intermediate School, 1050 S. Fifth St. The event is sponsored by the Community Action Drug Coalition and is named for Manda Spitler, who died of a heroin addiction in 2002. Cost is $20 ($15 without a T-shirt) by Wednesday, $25 up to race day. New Rider Clinic at Steel Wheels BMX

HOBART | Steel Wheels BMX, 709 North Hobart Road, will hold a free New Rider Clinic taught by Nicole Mirowski starting at 3 p.m. Oct. 26. The all-ages clinic will go over the basics of BMX racing. Loaner bikes and helmets will be available. Registration for the single-points race following the clinic runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m.; racing starts at 7 p.m. Race fees are $15 for class/cruiser, $5 for open/strider and discounts for those racing class and cruiser.
