Barracuda relays win state titles, set club records

Two 10-and-under girls relays from the Lake Central Barracudas Swim Club took firsts while setting club records at the Indiana Age Group Long Course State Championships, held July 26-28 at IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis.

The 200-meter medley relay team of Lily Robinson, Ellen Forjan, Lilah Nelson and Adisyn Sawaska won with a time of 2 minutes, 32.74 seconds, besting the previous LCB mark by more than six seconds; and the 200 freestyle relay team of Robinson, Nelson, Sawaska and Paige Bakker won with a time of 2:13.07, besting the previous club mark by nearly eight seconds.

Robinson also set a club long-course record with a seventh-place finish in the 100 backstroke (1:23.57), and Nelson placed third in the 100 butterfly (1:19.85) and fourth in the 50 fly (35.73) while helping the Barracudas win the 10-and-under state title.

Jillian Murray also set a LCB record when she swam a 400 freestyle time of 5:05.19 to take 18th in the 11-12 girls division.

 

Rusiniak wins three events at Hershey T&F Games

Katie Rusiniak, 14, of St. John, placed first in her division in the 100-meter dash, standing long jump and softball throw at the Hershey Track and Field Games state meet held last month in Muncie.

The Clark Middle School honor student qualified for the Hershey North American Finals going on this weekend in Hershey, Penn. Rusiniak will compete in the softball throw.

 

Crown Point Cal Ripken holding fall registration

Crown Point Cal Ripken is holding registration for ages 7-8 (machine pitch) and 9-11 (player pitch). Ages are determined as of April 30, 2013. Registration is being taken online through Aug. 15 at cpcalripkenbaseball.com.

HAMMOND | Hammond Optimist Youth Sports is hosting the 2013 Cal Ripken 12U World Series, Aug. 9-16 at the HOYS Complex located at Columbia Avenue and River Drive. The HOYS Bulldogs as well as the Northern Indiana champions will be two of the 10 teams participating in the series. Darrel Chaney to appear at InnerMission dinner

Morton graduate and former major league baseball player Darrel Chaney will appear at the InnerMission Inc. benefit dinner 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at the Area Career Center, 5727 Sohl Ave., Hammond.

Earlier that day, InnerMission will hold its third-annual golf classic at 8 a.m. at Wicker Park Memorial Park Golf Course in Highland.

Cost for the dinner is $30; cost for golf is $65; cost for both is $75.
