CUTLER HOPES FOR BETTER RESULTS TONIGHT: The first step for Jay Cutler was a bit wobbly. Maybe this one will be a little smoother.
The Bears meet San Diego tonight, and all eyes will remain on Cutler as he tries to adapt to new coach Marc Trestman's offense.
"We're moving along," Cutler said. "I don't think I can pinpoint exactly where we're at, but we're definitely getting better each and every day. Like I just said, there's ups and downs and there's positives and negatives. We're trying to look at the negatives and try to fix those as quickly as possible and continue to find more and more positives each and every day."
ANDREAN GRAD BRANTLEY NAMED PURDUE ASSISTANT: Purdue coach Matt Painter hired former Boilermakers player Brandon Brantley (Andrean) as an assistant coach Wednesday.
Brantley spent the last two years with Basketball University and as the EG10 AAU Under-16 head coach. He also served as a head coach at the Indianapolis Pro-Am Summer League from 2008-12. From 2006-10, he worked on the coaching staff at Indianapolis Ben Davis.
Brantley played for the Boilermakers when they won three straight Big Ten titles in the mid-1990s and was the captain and co-MVP of the 1995-96 team, which went 26-6 and was the top seed in the West Region.
RAILCATS SPLIT IN WICHITA: Abel Nieves' one-out RBI double off Kyle Lindquist (2-2) in the bottom of the seventh inning lifted Wichita to a 2-1 win over the RailCats in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday.
Adam Klein, Christian Vitters and Brian Kolb all had two hits for the RailCats. Starter Morgan Coombs allowed one run in 4 1/3 innings, striking out five.
The RailCats took the second game 10-5 as Reid Fronk doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in two runs. Ryan Brockett added two hits and Drew Martinez scored twice. Stephen Hiscock went six inning for the win.
RAILCATS YOUTH CAMP SATURDAY: The RailCats will host a youth baseball camp presented by Home Field Advantage from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday for Gary-area boys.
The event will feature RailCats players and coaches working with more than 150 children to develop their baseball and softball skills. The event will begin with a ceremonial first pitch by Al Spajer of U.S. Steel.

OILMEN HIRE VICKREY: The Northwest Indiana Oilmen of the Midwest Collegiate League have named Brandon Vickrey Director of Communications, a role that will include play-by-play broadcasting and public relations.
Vickrey has been a part of the Oilmen organization since the team’s inaugural season, serving as a broadcasting and media relations intern the past two years. He is a graduate of Portage High School and a Valparaiso University digital media major. Vickrey previously served as the coverage team coordinator for Ideas in Motion Media and is currently a radio producer for The Lakeshore-FM (89.1).
VALPO TABBED FOR FIFTH IN PRESEASON POLL: Valparaiso has been picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League preseason poll for women's soccer. Detroit was named the favorite with six first-place votes.

HEFFERNAN WINS 50K WALK AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: Robert Heffernan pulled away in the last 10 kilometers to win the gold medal in the 50-kilometer walk Wednesday, giving Ireland its first men's world championship title in 30 years.
Heffernan's gold came 30 years to the day after Eamonn Coughlan won the 5,000 meters in 1983.
