Men's basketball

BULLDOGS ADVANCE IN POSTSEASON TOURNEY: Backed by 28 points from E.C. Central grad Bryce Walker and 18 points from former Cardinal Michael Harris, South Suburban defeated Phoenix College 75-70 in the first round of the NJCAA Divsion II tournament Tuesday in Danville, Ill.

The Bulldogs will face the winner of Rend Lake and Cecil College at 8 p.m. today.

 

College baseball

PUC ADDS HIGHLAND PITCHER: Highland left-handed pitcher Danny Hamilton has committed to play baseball at Purdue Calumet, making him the eighth member of coach Dave Griffin's inaugural recruiting class.

Hamilton helped lead the Trojans to back-to-back Class 4A sectional championship games. He was named Honorable Mention All-Northwest Crossroads Conference in 2012.

 

Pro baseball

RAILCATS BRING BACK HISCOCK: The RailCats have re-signed 2012 ace Stephen Hiscock.

After pitching exclusively out of the bullpen to start his career, the 25-year-old right-hander was moved to the starting rotation in early June and put together an impressive season, with a 6-6 record and a team-leading 3.22 ERA, which ranked fifth in the American Association. He was tied for first on the team in wins and ranked second in innings pitched (125 2/3) and strikeouts (69). He has a career record of 10-11 with a 3.78 ERA.

 

College softball

PICO HONORED BY HORIZON: Valparaiso freshman Sierra Pico received her second Horizon League Pitcher of the Week honor after earning a pair of wins last week.

Pico surrendered just two hits while striking out five in the Crusaders' shutout victory over Maine. She gave up one run in three-plus innings of work in Valpo's win over Iowa State before tossing 5 1/3 innings and giving up one run to defeat Cornell at the USF Spring Invitational. On the week, Pico posted a 0.91 ERA over 15.1 innings.

LOCALS HONORED AT GRIDDY'S: Indiana Football Digest honored the best of 2012 and previewed 2013 at the seventh annual Griddy's on Sunday in Mishawaka.

Merrillville's Joe O'Connell was named the Offensive Coordinator of the Year. Big School All-State selections included quarterback Jake Raspopovich (Merrillville), running back David Yancey (Lake Central) and kicker Aaron DelGrosso (Hobart).

The Prime Time 25 for 2013 included Ryan Neal (Merrillville), Martayveus Carter (E.C. Central) and Gelen Robinson (Lake Central).

 

Youth basketball

LUTHERAN TOURNAMENT COMES TO VALPO: The Lutheran Basketball Association of America will host its annual championship Friday through Sunday in Valparaiso.

The event, first hosted by Valparaiso in 1971, brings together 64 teams comprised of middle school boys and girls from across the nation to battle for top honors. The tournament books 2,400 hotel rooms throughout Lake and Porter County, contributing $250,000 in hotel revenues alone to the South Shore and a total economic impact of $625,000.

PACERS PULL AWAY FROM STRUGGLING MAGIC: Paul George scored 19 points, and Tyler Hansbrough had 14 points and 14 rebounds, leading the Pacers to a 95-73 rout of the struggling Orlando Magic on Tuesday night.

The Pacers improved to 27-8 at home despite playing without second-leading scorer David West because of a sprained lower back.

E.C. Central graduate E'Twaun Moore collected eight points, two assists and a steal for the Magic, who lost their fourth straight on a night they shot just 31.8 percent from the field and coach Jacque Vaughn was ejected in a flurry of four technical fouls with 4:47 left in the third quarter.

 BULLS SIGN THOMAS TO 10-DAY CONTRACT: Forward Malcolm Thomas has signed a 10-day contract with the Bulls.

Thomas appeared in five games with the Golden State Warriors, scoring three points and grabbing five rebounds. He also appeared in two NBA Development League games this season — with the Santa Cruz Warriors and with the Los Angeles D-Fenders.

The 24-year-old Thomas began his college career at Pepperdine before playing two seasons at San Diego State.

COWBOYS, DOLPHINS TO OPEN PRESEASON: The Dallas Cowboys and Miami Dolphins will meet in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 4 to open the NFL's preseason.

The night game at Fawcett Stadium will follow the induction ceremonies the previous day. Entering the Hall of Fame will be former Cowboys offensive lineman Larry Allen, former Dolphins wide receiver Cris Carter, and Bill Parcells, who coached in Dallas and later was Miami's vice president of football operations.
