PATERNO HOSPITALIZED FRIDAY: Former Penn State coach Joe Paterno was admitted to the hospital Friday for observation due to minor complications from cancer treatments, his family said.

In a statement released to The Associated Press, his family said that the 85-year-old Paterno continues to undergo a "regimen of treatments" after being diagnosed two months ago with what they have termed a treatable form of lung cancer. The family hoped his latest stay would be brief.

HAWKS' CARCILLO DONE FOR THE YEAR: Blackhawks forward Daniel Carcillo will undergo reconstructive left knee surgery Tuesday, sidelining him for the rest of the year.

Carcillo was helped off the ice after he launched Edmonton's Tom Gilbert into the boards during the second period of the Oilers' 4-3 victory Jan. 2. The 26-year-old Carcillo received a major boarding penalty and a game misconduct for the hit, and was later suspended for seven games.

Team physician Dr. Michael Terry anticipates a "full return" for Carcillo in six months. Carcillo had two goals and nine assists in 28 games in his first season with Chicago.

The Blackhawks also activated forward Marcus Kroger from injured reserve Friday and sent forward Ben Smith to Rockford of the American Hockey League.

CROSBY SKATES: Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby skated Friday for the first time in more than a month, and his teammates left little doubt they're behind their captain as he continues to recover from a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms.

The Penguins taped a "C'' on each of their practice jerseys in tribute to Crosby, who hasn't played since Dec. 5 after the symptoms that kept him sidelined for nearly a year returned.

Crosby joined the team on the ice for the final 30 minutes of a morning skate before Friday night's game against the Florida Panthers. While Crosby called his return a "positive," he's still uncertain when he'll be cleared to practice, let alone play.

RAMS SET TO HIRE FISHER: The St. Louis Rams say they are finalizing a deal to hire Jeff Fisher as their new coach.

The team confirmed reports Friday that Fisher will be joining the Rams after considering a job with the Miami Dolphins.

The 53-year-old Fisher interviewed twice with the Rams, once in Denver with owner Stan Kroenke and again in St. Louis when he toured facilities and met with quarterback Sam Bradford.

Fisher is widely considered the top prize in this winter's coaching-search sweepstakes. He coached the Titans for 17 years, including a Super Bowl matchup against the Rams in 2000 in which Tennessee fell 1 yard shy of forcing overtime in a 23-16 loss.
