BAUTISTA, BLUE JAYS BEAT SOX IN 10: Jose Bautista hit a game-tying home run in the ninth inning, and Rajai Davis scored on a wild pitch in the 10th to lead the Toronto Blue Jays to a 7-5 win over the White Sox at a dimmed U.S. Cellular Field on Tuesday night.

During the 10th, there was a brief delay after a handful of bulbs in the light standards above the infield at U.S. Cellular Field went out as Ramon Troncoso (0-1) prepared to throw his 2-1 pitch to Adam Lind. Following the delay, Davis scored on Troncoso's wild pitch.

REDS ROUT CUBS: Xavier Paul hit a three-run home run; Joey Votto added a two-run shot, and the Cincinnati Reds roughed up Matt Garza and the Cubs 12-2 on Tuesday night.

Tony Cingrani (3-0), a South Suburban College product, filling in for the injured Johnny Cueto, pitched seven strong innings as Cincinnati extended its franchise-best winning streak at Wrigley Field to 11 games. Cingrani allowed two runs and four hits, while striking out five and allowing one walk.

Garza (1-1) was tagged for a career-high nine runs and nine hits in five-plus innings.

CUBS SUSPEND STEWART AFTER TWEETS: The Cubs suspended Triple-A infielder Ian Stewart on Tuesday without pay for an indefinite period following his critical comments about the organization.

Stewart took to Twitter early Tuesday morning to vent his frustrations. He has played the entire season for Iowa, the Cubs' top minor league affiliate. He is due to make $2 million this year.

He tweeted: "there (sic) going to let me Rott (sic) in AAA all season then non tender me after."

Stewart also put the blame on Cubs manager Dale Sveum, writing: "I think dale Doesn't like me and He's running the show."

Stewart later apologized for his remarks.

Stewart is hitting .164 with four home runs in 39 games with Iowa, and has committed six errors at third base.

 

College football

CHESTERTON GRAD BROWN NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA TEAM: St. Francis defensive back Taylor Brown (Chesterton) has been named to the Sporting News College Football Preview Magazine’s Preseason All-America Team.

Brown led St. Francis in solo tackles last season with 49. He’s also the team’s leading returning tackler.

AREA PLAYERS TO TAKE PART IN ALL-STAR CLASSIC SERIES THIS WEEKEND: A dozen local players will take part in the fourth annual Class Basketball All-Star Series Classic on Friday and Saturday in New Castle.

Jaclyn Heath (LaPorte) will play in the Juniors game at 11:30 a.m. Friday. Josh Fleming (LaPorte), Keenan Simmons (Michigan City) and Arthur Haggard (Bowman Academy) will take part in the Juniors game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Keshyana Cooper (Michigan City), Katie Bobos (Lowell), Emily Ziese (Rensselaer) and Nicki Monahan (Portage) will play in the Class 3A/4A Girls game at 1 p.m. Saturday. Darric Obinger (Calumet Christian) and John Ray (Gary Lighthouse Academy) will play in the Boys Christian game at 3 p.m. Saturday. Antonio Pipkin (Bowman Academy) will play in the Class A/2A Boys game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, while Skyler Moss (Andrean) will play in the Class 3A/4A Boys Senior game at 7 p.m. The game will air on www.broadcastsport.net.

VALPO'S RECRUITING CLASS RECOGNIZED: The incoming class for Valparaiso was ranked 22nd for mid-major schools nationwide by TennisRecruiting.net.

The class includes Dave Bacalla, who is ranked 76th in his class and seventh in the Great Lakes region. Recruits also include Jeffrey Schorsch (13th in the region, 99th in the nation), Kyle Dunn (23rd in the region) and Charlie Ernhardt (35th in the region).

BEARS SIGN DEFENSIVE TACKLE: The Bears on Tuesday agreed to terms with defensive tackle Sedrick Ellis on a one-year contract.

The 6-foot-1, 307-pound Ellis started all 70 games played over five seasons (2008-12) in New Orleans after being selected by the Saints in the first round (seventh overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft out of USC.

Ellis recorded 174 tackles (99 solo), 12.5 sacks, 13 pass break ups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery during his time with the Saints. In 2012, he  started all 16 games for New Orleans, collecting 36 tackles.

Former St. Joseph’s College head men’s basketball coach Richard Davis has been named an assistant at Florida Southern. Davis was 94-102 with the Pumas. ... President Barack Obama will welcome the WNBA champion Fever to the White House on Friday to celebrate their 2012 title.
