Sports Digest: Purdue Calumet women's basketball win streak reaches four

Men's basketball

IRISH HAND SETON HALL FIRST HOME LOSS: Jack Cooley had 13 points and 11 rebounds, and Notre Dame turned in its best defensive effort of the season in limiting Seton Hall to its lowest point total since 2005 in a 55-42 Big East victory Wednesday night.

Jerian Grant had 15 points, and Eric Atkins 14 as the Irish (13-8, 5-3) followed their victory over previously unbeaten and then-No. 1 ranked Syracuse with another impressive performance.

PEREGRINES RAIN 3S ON JUDSON: Purdue University Calumet knocked down a season-high 13 3-point field goals to fuel a 71-62 CCAC victory over Judson University on Wednesday.

Drew Ridlen led all scorers with a career-high 23 points, drilling five treys for PUC (6-16, 3-5). Kedric Williams came off the bench to tally 15 points, while Noah Allen added a dozen. Both connected from deep three times.

CCSJ FALLS TO CARDINAL STRITCH: Calumet College was outscored 40-20 in the second half and fell to CCAC frontrunner Cardinal Stritch 71-45 Wednesday. Robert Jackson was the Crimson Wave's only double-digit scorer with 13. Karl Anderson snagged eight rebounds for CCSJ (8-12, 4-4), which shot just 32 percent.

 

Women's basketball

PUC EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO FOUR: Stephaine Beck scored a game-high 19 points Wednesday night to power Purdue University Calumet to its fourth consecutive conference win, a  72-63 decision over visiting Judson.

The Peregrines matched their 2010-11 win total, improving to 17-8 overall and 6-1 in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Brooklyn Short collected 16 points and a game-high six assists for PUC, while Amanda Gaskin added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.

FIELDS PUTS UP 25 IN CAL COLLEGE LOSS: Moneva Fields scored 25 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, but Calumet College still fell to Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference leader Cardinal Stritch 78-60 on Wednesday.

Jennifer Walton added 14 points and four assists for the Crimson Wave (3-20, 0-7). Rebecca Arredondo notched 10 points.

VU'S VARNER EARNS ACADEMIC HONOR: Valparaiso University's Ashley Varner has been named the Horizon League's Scholar-Athlete of the Month.

Varner is working on her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling. The fifth-year senior averaged 13.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in seven games during December.

 

Local bowling

GREATER CALUMET AREA USBC SLATES TOURNEYS: Bowlers in the new Greater Calumet Area USBC will have a chance at tournament titles with the annual Senior Singles Championships and the GCA Championships.

The Senior Singles Championships for GCA-sanction bowlers aged 50 and older will take place in three squads at 2 p.m. Saturday and at 9 a.m. and noon Sunday at Lynwood Bowl, 2581 Glenwood-Lansing Road in Lynwood. Cost is $25 per entry. The handicap tournament includes four divisions based on age and average.

The GCA Championships will take place Feb. 12, 19 and 26 at Plaza Lanes, 8101 Kennedy Ave., in Highland. Cost is $20 per event, which includes team (four person) event, singles and doubles men's and women's divisions. There will be no separate women's team event. Bowlers will have a choice of competing in pin over average or scratch divisions, or both for an additional $10 per event.

HIGHLAND YOUTH SOFTBALL TO HOLD BOWLING FUNDRAISER: Highland Youth Softball will hold a bowling fundraiser for adults from 8 to 11 p.m. Saturday at Plaza Lanes. Tickets are $25 per person. Besides bowling, there will be food, a cash bar, an auction and a raffle for a chance to win Bulls and Blackhawks tickets. Raffle tickets are $10 each or three for $20.

Local softball

VHS CLINIC, SHOWCASE TAKE PLACE SUNDAY: Valparaiso High School's softball program will host a clinic and run a talent showcase Sunday.

The clinic will run from 1 to 3 p.m. It's open to fourth- and fifth-graders. The showcase will run from 3 to 5 p.m. It's open to those in grades six through eight. The cost for each event is $25.

Major League Baseball has told teams that Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes is eligible to negotiate with big league teams. Earlier this month, Cespedes said six major league teams — including the Cubs and Sox — are interested in him.
