DANKS HOMERS IN 11TH AS SOX BEAT ROYALS: Jordan Danks atoned for a baserunning blunder in the ninth inning by hitting a solo home run in the 11th that lifted the White Sox over the Kansas City Royals 2-1 Monday.
Danks connected with two outs off Kelvin Herrera (2-3) for his first homer of the season. The White Sox avoided a three-game sweep and won for only the fifth time in 18 tries in Kauffman Stadium.
PEREGRINES ADD ANOTHER RECRUIT: Crown Point native Steve Lowe has committed to Purdue Calumet for the inaugural 2014 baseball season.
The 6-foot-1 right-hander is currently at South Suburban and has led the Bulldogs to a 28-23 overall record this season. He has compiled a 1-1 record with a 3.91 earned run average in seven appearances this spring.
ANCILLA OUTSIDE HITTER PICKS PUC: Ancilla standout Kelly Duke will take her talents to Purdue University Calumet next season.
Duke helped the Chargers to a 20-16 overall record in 2012, tallying 222 kills and a team-leading 358 digs and 48 service aces on the year. She amassed over 500 digs and 400 kills in her two-year career at Ancilla, earning Third Team All-Michigan Community College Athletic Association honors as a sophomore.
WEISSENHOFER HONORED: Valparaiso freshman Taylor Weissenhofer is the Horizon League Pitcher of the Week after closing out the regular season by allowing just one run in 26 2/3 innings of work.
Weissenhofer opened with a stellar pair of performances at Western Michigan, starting with a four-out save in the opener of a doubleheader. She then threw a complete-game shutout in a 1-0 win in the nightcap, striking out 10 and surpassing the Crusaders' season strikeouts record.
On the week, Weissenhofer went 4-0 with a save, posting a 0.26 ERA. She struck out 34 and walked just six, allowing opponents to hit a miniscule .163 against her.
The honor is the second of the season for Weissenhofer, who also was named league Pitcher of the Week on March 5.
