VU GAINS SPLIT AT SPRING INVITATIONAL: Joylyn Ichiyama had a double, home run and three RBIs as Valparaiso defeated Iowa State 4-2, gaining a split at the USF Spring Inivtational in Clearwater, Fla.


Boys basketball

PARKER, SIMEON TAKE 4A TITLE: Jabari Parker scored 20 points to lead Simeon to its fourth-consecutive state title with a 58-40 win against Lincolnshire Stevenson at the IHSA Class 4A boys basketball state finals.

Russell Woods added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Kendall Pollard chipped in 10 points and nine boards for the Wolverines (30-3) on Saturday.

MORGAN PARK DEFEATS CAHOKIA FOR 3A TITLE: Morgan Park received contributions from up and down its lineup this season. It was no different in the IHSA Class 3A boys basketball state title game on Saturday, as the Mustangs had four players score in double figures in a 63-48 win against Cahokia.

Led by 14 points from DePaul recruit Billy Garrett, 13 from Markee Williams, 11 from Xzavier Taylor and 10 from Dayton recruit Kyle Davis, Morgan Park (33-3) won its second state title and first since 1976.

TOEWS, HOSSA LEAD HAWKS' ROUT OF STARS: Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa each scored twice in leading the Blackhawks to an 8-1 rout of the Dallas Stars on Saturday night.

Nick Leddy and Patrick Kane each had a goal and two assists as eight Blackhawks scored two or more points and Chicago boosted its road record to 12-1-2 with a dominant win on the second stop of a four-game road trip.

Corey Crawford made 18 saves for his 13th victory. Johnny Oduya and Duncan Keith had the Blackhawks' other goals.


Pro basketball

HAWES LEADS 76ERS PAST PACERS: Spencer Hawes had 18 points and career highs with 16 rebounds and seven blocked shots to lead the Philadelphia 76ers to a 98-91 victory over the Pacers on Saturday night.

Roy Hibbert had 25 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacers.

FIRE, SPORTING KANSAS CITY TIE: The Fire managed to earn their first point in three games this year despite remaining scoreless, tying Sporting Kansas City 0-0 on Saturday.

Chicago (0-2-1) looked poised to break its scoring drought when Dan Paladini got free in front of Sporting's goal in the 90th minute, but Jimmy Nielsen made the sliding save to preserve his first shutout of the year.

Sean Johnson made three saves for Chicago, earning his first shutout of the year.


Auto racing

KYLE BUSCH TAKES NATIONWIDE RACE AT BRISTOL: Kyle Busch held off rookie Kyle Larson at the finish Saturday to win the Nationwide Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Larson stalked Busch around the bullring as he looked for the right place to make his move. It came as they closed in on the finish line with both drivers held up by lapped cars.

Busch chose the low line and Larson went high, then tried to squeeze his way past Busch. Larson's car bounced off of both the wall and Busch's car, but he was nipped at the finish line by Busch.

It was Busch's second victory of the season and fifth career Nationwide victory at Bristol, tying him with Kevin Harvick for the most in the series. Busch has a series-record 53 wins.

Brian Vickers was third and was followed by Sam Hornish Jr. and Harvick.


Around the horn

Kevin Streelman had a 6-under 65 and was tied for the lead with Justin Leonard (67) and George Coetzee of South Africa (68) at the Tampa Bay Championship. ... Ai Miyazato regained control in the LPGA Founders Cup, ending up with a bigger cushion than she expected after Stacy Lewis was penalized two strokes after the round. Miyazato shot her second straight 5-under 67 after opening with a tournament-record 64. At 19-under 197, the diminutive Japanese star had a four-stroke lead over Lewis and Jee Young Lee.
