WHITE SOX SIGN OUTFIELDER WISE TO 1-YEAR CONTRACT: The White Sox have agreed to a one-year, $700,000 contract with veteran outfielder Dwayne Wise.

The 34-year-old Wise signed with Chicago as a free agent on Aug. 3. He is a career .228 hitter with 30 home runs and 112 RBIs in 546 games over 10 seasons with Toronto, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Florida and the New York Yankees in addition to the White Sox.

Wise preserved Mark Buehrle's 2009 perfect game against Tampa Bay when he made an over-the-wall catch to stop a home run in the ninth inning.

ESPN TO BROADCAST COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS: The college football playoff system will be televised on ESPN for 12 years once it starts after the 2014 season, the network said Wednesday.

The title game will be played on a Monday, at least a week after the semifinals.

The deal is worth close to $500 million a year, a person with knowledge of the terms said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the fee had not been announced.

"Folks are going to love this playoff and the attention ESPN will give to it," BCS executive director Bill Hancock said in a statement.

ESPN's current four-year contract to air the Sugar, Orange and Fiesta bowls along with the BCS title game is worth about $125 million per year.

GRINNELL PLAYER SCORES 138 POINTS: Jack Taylor's performance left even Kobe Bryant impressed.

The Division III guard shattered the NCAA scoring record with 138 points, hoisting a mind-boggling 108 attempts — or one shot every 20 seconds — in eclipsing the previous record by 25 points.

Taylor made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts while playing 36 minutes in Grinnell's 179-104 victory over Faith Baptist Bible on Tuesday night in Grinnell, Iowa.

"That's crazy, man. I don't care what level you're at. Scoring 138 points is pretty insane," the Lakers' superstar said after Los Angeles' victory over the Nets.
