MERRILLVILLE OFFERS TICKETS, BUS TRIP TO BOYS REGIONAL: Merrillville will sell tickets to this weekend's basketball regional at Michigan City and offer a bus trip for students and adults. Tickets will be available Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. and on Friday from 7:30 a.m. until noon; enter the school through entrance "Q."

Game tickets are $10 and cover the morning semifinals and regional final at 7:30. Bus tickets are $5. The Merrillville athletic department accepts cash, Visa and MasterCard.

 

College basketball

NOTRE DAME WOMEN WIN IN 3OTS: Skylar Diggins scored 29 points and sparked a decisive run in the third overtime as No. 2 Notre Dame beat third-ranked Connecticut 96-87 Monday night to win Big East regular-season title outright for the second straight year.

The Fighting Irish (28-1, 16-0) went undefeated in the conference for the first time since joining in 1995-96 and became the first team to win six of seven games against Connecticut (27-3, 14-2) in more than two decades.

Diggins added 11 rebounds. Kayla McBride added 26 points before fouling out.

BULLDOGS ADVANCE TO REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS: The South Suburban College men's and women's basketball teams earned regional playoff semifinal victories to advance to the Region IV-A Championships this week.

The Lady Bulldogs defeated Kankakee 66-54 on Saturday and will play Prairie State College on Saturday at noon. The men's team defeated Black Hawk College 70-49 on Sunday and will play Kishawukee College on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Both games will be at Illinois Valley Community College.

 

Pro baseball

INDIANS PITCHER GOES 3 INNINGS VS. CUBS AFTER BEING HIT IN HEAD: Carlos Carrasco pitched three innings after being hit in the side of the head by a comebacker in the first, Mark Reynolds and Nick Swisher each homered to help the Cleveland Indians beat the Cubs 13-5 Monday.

Carrasco was hit on the side of the head by Darnell McDonald's line drive. Carrasco went down on his knees and was tended to by trainers but stayed in the game. He allowed four hits, two runs and a walk. He struck out two.

Swisher has three of the Indians' 20 hits and Lonnie Chisenhall finished a triple short of the cycle and had three RBIs.

Cubs right-hander Alberto Cabrera struggled through 2 1-3 innings. He allowed seven hits, five earned runs and a walk.

Alfonso Soriano had his first home run of the spring and also doubled for Chicago.

DANKS SOLID IN 1ST OUTING SINCE MAY: John Danks hadn't pitched in a game since last May.

The 10 months that passed since felt like 10 years to the White Sox left-hander.

The last two hours before Danks started Chicago's spring game against the San Francisco Giants on Monday seemed like an eternity to him, too.

Danks looked comfortable in his 35-pitch start, throwing 27 for strikes and allowing one run on two hits and no walks with two strikeouts. One of the hits was a home run to left field by Joaquin Arias, the second batter he faced. After that, Danks retired five batters in a row before allowing a leadoff single in the third to Kensuke Tanaka.

RAILCATS BRING BACK CRISTIAN GUERRERO: After a year away, the RailCats will return the big bat of home-run hitter Cristian Guerrero, the team announced Monday.

Guerrero is the RailCats all-time leader with 58 home runs and also holds the single-season record of 19, set in 2010. The 32-year-old was granted his release from the team last year, signed with Winnipeg and was traded to Sioux Falls.

The RailCats also announced several other moves. Right-handed pitcher Dexter Carter and catcher Kyle Day were placed on irrevocable waivers, as both are retiring from baseball. They ‘Cats also signed right-handed pitcher Michael Oros, who was the first pick in the Texas Winter League draft.

 

Around the horn

The No. 15-ranked Valparaiso bowling team finished eighth at the Central Missouri Women's Invitational on Sunday in Kansas City, Mo. The Crusaders (54-59) will conclude the regular season March 15 to 17 with the Columbia 300 Music City Classic at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn. ... The McLegends basketball showcase is looking for former high school and college women's basketball players to compete on an all-star team in a game against high school seniors on April 20.
