Not all fans of the National Softball Association "B" World Series were seated in the stands Tuesday with a hot dog in one hand, soft drink in the other.

Many "fans" behind the scenes had chain saws, rakes and welding torches.

The severe morning thunderstorms and wind damage that knocked power out to parts of the region failed to put a damper on the 243 teams playing on 39 fields in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.

As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, only the Sharp Softball Complex in Highland was still without power.

Jason Sands, director of sports development for South Shore Sports Promotions, praised the team effort of local park departments working at the game sites.

"We had portable fences that blew off, porta-pots that tipped over, roofs of dugouts blown off and, of course, flooding on all the fields," Sands said.

"All systems are up and running. All fields except at Highland are running. And that's a huge, huge testament to all the hard work and dedication of the staffs at those fields."

Games are scheduled every one hour and 45 minutes, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and continue through the weekend.

"There's a bit of a delay but game times were built in for rain delays," Sands said of Tuesday's massive cleanup.

"The work of those park departments shows how much this world series means to them as well."
