Charles T. Abbring

DeMotte, IN.

Charles T. Abbring, 88, of DeMotte, IN., passed away at St. Anthony's

Medical Center at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday December 21, 1996. He was born in

Kenner Twp. Jasper, Indiana on August 9, 1908 to the late Thomas and Nellie

Evers Abbring. Married June 17, 1938 in Crown Point, IN. to Alma A Bormann, who

survives. Attended DeMotte High School. Owner and operator of Martin's Gas

Station in DeMotte for 44 years. Lifetime member of American Reformed Church of

DeMotte and Charter member of DeMotte Town Board. Also survived by children,

Mrs. Ruth "Tootie" (William) Yates of Fair Oaks, IN., Chuck (Beverly) Abbring

and David (Paula) Abbring of DeMotte, IN.; seven grandchildren; six great

grandchildren; sisters Mrs. Olive Ooms and Mrs. Dorothy (Sam) Hamstra of

DeMotte, IN. and brother, Thomas (Mildred) Abbring of Wheatfield, IN. Preceded

in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Nellie Ann Bohling

Merrillville

Nellie Ann Bohling, 64, of Merrillville, passed away at Methodist Hospital

Southlake Campus on Saturday, December 21, 1996. She was a member of Our Lady

of Consolation Church, Merrillville. A member of Our Lady of Consolation Church

Women's Guild, the Vivian Society, the Hobart Elks Lodge #1152, the St. John

V.F.W. Post #717 Ladies Auxiliary. She had been active with the Girl Scouts

many years ago and had been an avid card player. Nellie is preceded in death by

one daughter, Donna, her parents and two brothers, Charles and Elden Hogan.

Nellie is survived by her beloved husband, Norbert V. Bohling of Merrillville.

She is also survived by her son James L. (Laura) Bohling Sr. of Norwalk, Iowa;

her daughter, Mary T. (Mike) Collins of Crown Point; five grandchildren, one

sister, Lois (Richard) Troup of Garland, Texas. Nellie is also survived by

many other relatives and close friends.

Edward "Eddie" J. Danko, 53, of Griffith, IN. pased away Saturday,

December 21, 1996 at The Community Hospital, Munster, IN. He is survived by his

wife Linda "Lin" (nee Thorley); mother, Julia Danko of Selma, Alabama; six

children: Tom (Mayra) Danko of Jacksonville, FL., Jennifer Mayes of Lauderhill,

FL., Michael Danko and Michelle Danko both of Merrillville, Mark Sprengel of

Hammond and Michael (Brenda) Sprengel of Portage; two sisters, Dolores (Robert)

Ehrlich of Marion, IN. and Joey (Coy) Dillon of Selma, Alabama; father and

mother-in-law, Robert and Joyce Thorley of Hammond; several nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by his father, Alex.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 24, 1996, 10 a.m. from the

Bocken Funeral Home, 7042 Kennedy Ave., Hessville, IN., with Jim Spradlin,

Minister and Dr. Johnny Colsten officiating. Burial at Elmwood Cemetery,

Mr. Danko was a lifetime resident of the Calumet area. He retired in

December of 1996 from U.S. Steel Gary Works with 30 years of service as a roll

grinder in the roll shop. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran; member of South

Side Christian Church of Munster; andVietnam Veterans Association of

Merrillville. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family would be appreciated.

Julius Elish, 77, of East Chicago, passed away Saturday, December 21,

1996 at St. Catherine Hospital. Survived by his wife of 50 years Kathryn Elish;

one daughter, Rebecca Elish of Crown Point; one son, Nick (Maryann) Elish of

Highland; three grandchildren, Katie, Jessica and Nicholas Elish; two brothers,

George (Lois) Elish of Highland and John Elish of Hammond; one sister, Mary

Berghian of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Preceded in

death by parents, Nick and Lottie Elish, daughter, Roberta Lynn Elish, and two

brothers, Nick and Emil Elish.

Mr. Elish was a retired salesman of Gary Wine & Liquors; a World War II

Army veteran; member of American Legion Allied Post #266 and the Disabled

American Veterans; Life member of Highland (East Chicago) Elks Lodge #981;

member of East Chicago Moose Lodge #1256; founding father and life member of

Indiana Harbor Yacht Club; member of St. Nicholas Church. Mr. Elish was an

avid fisherman and lifelong resident of East Chicago. In lieu of flowers,

donations to the St. Nicholas Romanian Catholic Church in East Chicago, would

be appreciated.

Mary A. Grenchik (nee Hruskocy), 74, of Whiting, IN. passed away Sunday,

December 22, 1996 at the Hammond-Whiting Care Center. She is survived by her

beloved husband of 51 years, George J. Grenchik; daughter Mary Ellen (Craig)

Kouris of Whiting; three sons, George (Marie) Grenchik of Calumet City, Stephen

(Nancy) Grenchik and Phillip (Maire) Grenchik, both of Whiting; ten

grandchildren: Mary Ellen, Joe, Lianne, Sandy, Steve, Scott, George, Craig,

Danny and Alison; sister, Margaret (late Mike) Skundrich of Whiting; brother,

Joseph (Virginia) Hruskocy of Whiting; seven sisters-in-law, Theresa Hruskocy,

Catherine Hruskocy, Jane Hruskocy, Ann (late Mike) Adams and Helen Grenchik,

all of Whiting, Margaret (late Joseph) Markovich of Munster, Mary (late

Michael) O'Renick of Sun City, Florida; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded

in death by her parents, Joseph and Mary Hruskocy and five brothers, Thomas,

Andrew, Steve, John and Milton Hruskocy.

Robert O. Hawkins, 57, of Merrillville, IN. passed away on Saturday,

December 21, 1996. Survived by wife, Delores (nee Russell, Wilkening); one son,

Randy (Robin) Wilkening of Portage; two daughters, Shannon (Bret) Risher of

Simi Valley, CA. and Dawn (Allen) Daniel of Merrillville; three grandchildren;

Randy and Christopher Wilkening, and Haley Risher; mother, Margaret Hawkins of

Lake Panasoffkee, FL; one sister, Marsha Ellison of Northbrook, IL. Preceded in

death by his father, Russell.

Mr. Hawkins was retired from the N.C.R. Corporation; a veteran of the U.S.

Navy and member of the Merrillville American Legion Post 430 serving as

Chaplain, First Vice Commander and State Delegate; and member of St. John's

Assoc. appreciated.

Tony "TK" "KLAJ" Klaja

Hobart

Tony "TK" "KLAJ" Klaja, 18, of Hobart, IN. passed away Saturday, December

21 1996. A lifelong area resident. He was born September 16, 1978 in

Valparaiso, Indiana. Tony was an avid outdoors man. He played Hobart Little

League from age 8 to 15. Was pitcher for the Hobart High School Varsity

Baseball Team, pitched in the Babe Ruth Senior League World Series and also

pitched for the Hammond Chiefs. He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Nancy

Klaja of Hobart; one brother, Bryan Klaja at home; grandparents, Eileen and

Delos Swallow of Portage; aunts and uncles including Linda (Mike) Benka,

Charles (Ethel) Swallow, Thomas Swallow, Judith (Charles) Stempley and Linda

(William) Yarboro; several cousins. Preceded in death by his grandfather, Henry

Klaja.

James R. Kocek

DeMotte

James R. Kocek, 73, of DeMotte, IN, passed away at St. Mary's Medical

Center, Hobart, IN. at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 1996. He was born

October 13, 1923 in Chicago, IL. to the late Rudolph and Mildred Klinka Kocek.

A resident of the city since 1972. Mr. Kocek attended Chicago Public Schools.

He married Arlyne M. VanDrent on May 4, 1944 in Chicago, IL., she survives.

Also survived by daughters, Carol A. Corsello of Chicago, IL. and Diane "Dee

Dee" Brown of Calumet City, IL.; brothers, Robert (Delores) Kocek of Lagrange

Park, IL. and William (Verna) Kocek of Foster City, MI.

Mr. Kocek was manager at Howard Industries, East Chicago, IN. for 10

years. He was also at Calumet Construction in management. U.S. Marine veteran.

He was a member of Radio Lodge #1082, Chicago, IL., Sheet Metal Workers Local

#20 and member of DeMotte-KV Rotary Club. Memorials may be made to Disabled

Veterans of America.

Michael J. Livovich

Michael J. Livovich, 51, of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, December

21, 1996 at Porter Memorial Hospital. He was born August 27, 1945 in East

Chicago, IN. the son of George and Helen (Kolanowski) Livovich. He graduated

from Hammond Morton High School in 1964 and then Indiana University with a

Business Degree. He was currently employed as Credit Manager for Azcon Corp. in

Chicago. On October 23, 1971 he married Christine Franyi who survives along

with two daughters, Jennifer Livovich and Erika Livovich, both of Valparaiso,

and two sisters, Jeanne (Frank) Martone of Crown Point and Barbara Bilen of

Valparaiso.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, 9:15 a.m. prayers at Moeller

Funeral Home, Valparaiso, IN., to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Wanatah for 10

a.m. Funeral Mass, Fr. Jerry Schweitzer officiating with cremation to follow.

Visitation Thursday and Friday from 3 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service Friday at

4 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes

Harold W. Love, 97, of Lowell, IN. died Saturday, December 21, 1996. He

is survived by a son, John (Beatrice) Love of Lansing, IL. and a daughter,

Dortha (Bill) O'Brien of Maumee, OH.; four grandchildren and seven great

grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Edith in 1990.

Audrey T. Nault, 87, of Griffith, IN. passed away Saturday, December 21,

1996. Survived by son, Richard Nault of Oxford, Ohio; daughter, Linda (Patrick)

Gibson of Shelbyville, Indiana; three grandchildren, Peter (Belinda) Gibson,

Erin and Colleen Gibson; one great grandson, Nicholas; and a brother, Richard

(Marian) Smith of St. Louis Park, Minnesota.

Christine L. O'Connor, 92, of Chesterton, IN., passed away Friday,

December 20, 1996 at the Fountain View Terrace Nursing Home in LaPorte,

Indiana. She was preceded in death by her husband, William O'Connor in 1985.

Survived by two sons, Gene O'Connor Of LaPorte, IN. and Robert (Sandy) O'Connor

of Porter, IN.; six grandchildren; three great grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday, December 23, 1996 at

1 P.M. from St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Chesterton, IN., Rev. John Zemelko

officiating. Burial at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Chesterton, IN. The family will

Order of the Eastern Star Griffith Chapter #583. He is survived by his wife

Artemis Pangere; one daughter, Irene (George) Nestorovich; two grandsons,

George (Kristi) Nestorovich and Mark (Katie) Nestorovich; one great grandson,

Erik Ross Nestorovich; one brother, Nichols J. Pangere; three nephews, John

(Eileen) Pangere, Ross (Patty) Pangere and Steve (Georgianne) Pangere.

James W. Peterson, 46 of Valparaiso, former of Northbrook, Illinois,

passed away at Porter Memorial Hospital on Friday, December 20, 1996. Survived

by wife, Marcey A. (nee Kornstein) Peterson; two sons, Adam M. and Mark R.

Peterson, both at home; parents, Carl L. and Marian E. Peterson of Niles, IL.;

one sister, Kathleen M. Peterson of Harrisburg, PA.; sister-in-law, Jeri L.

(Henry) Jakob of Chicago; brother-in-law, Jeffrey M. Kornstein of Des Plaines,

IL.; parents-in-law, Bernice and Benge Kornstein of Northbrook, IL.; and

nephew, Matthew H. Jakob.

Celebration of Jim's life will be held Monday, December 23, 1996 at 6 P.M.

at the Burns Funeral Home, (corner of 101st & Broadway), Merrillville/Crown

Jim was a graduate of Maine East High School, Class of 1968. He was a

graduate of the Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois and the

Divers Institute of Technology in Seattle, Washington. He was owner and

president of Chicago Underwater Inc. He was a member of the Soaring Society and

was an avid sailor and snow skier.

Robert Petrovich, 68, formerly of Gary and a Merrillville resident for 26

years, passed away at Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus on Friday, December

20, 1996. Survived by two sons, Brian B. Petrovich of Ann Arbor, Michigan and

Brett J. Petrovich of Merrillville; sister-in-law, Rosemary Evans of

Merrillville; and many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives. Preceded in

death by his wife Barbara Ann Petrovich in 1994.

Chicago; and two nephews.

Eleanor Riley, 80, of Lansing, IL. passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996.

She is survived by one son, Rex of Walnut Creek, CA.; two brothers, Bob (Ella)

Strand of Shoreview, Minnesota and Carl Strand of Brea, CA. She was preceded in

death by her husband Rex, daughter, Judy, sister, Judith Kauppi and two

brothers, Clarence and Willard Strand.

There will be no visitation. A memorial service was held on Sunday,

December 22, 1996 at the Tri State Manor Nursing Home.

Mrs. Riley was a former member of the Lansing Country Club. In lieu of

George Skorich, Sr., 77, of Gary, IN., passed away on Friday, December

20, 1996. Preceded in death by his loving wife Mary in 1991. He is survived by

three sons, Nick (Ann) Skorich of Anaheim, CA., Pete and George, Jr. Skorich of

Gary; two brothers, Nick Skorich of Merrillville and Mike (Katie) Skorich of

Hobart; two grandchildren, Laura (Craig) Taylor and Kurt Skorich and one great

grandson, Sean Collin Taylor, all Lamirda, CA.; brother-in-law, Steve Shaban of

Valparaiso; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Skorich was a retired employee of U.S. Steel Gary Works for 40 years;

graduate of Froebel High School; and a member of Local #1014 and the F.O.P.

Chris G. Vambakas, 66, of Highland, IN. passed away on Sunday, December

22, 1996 at The Communithy Hospital, Munster. He is survived by his loving wife

Lorraine; two sisters, Bess (Wm) Marianes of Atlanta, GA. and Helen (Tom)

Ioakimidis of Griffith; many nieces and nephews; three brother-in-law and four

sisters-in-law and two dear friends, George Manou and Tom Angelos.

Mike J. Vrabel, 87, of Highland, IN. passed away Saturday, December 21,

1996. Survived by one son, Michael (Jeanie) Vrabel of Virginia; three

daughters, Diana (George) Abbott of Highland, Arlene (Jerry) Amendola of Dyer

and Joyce Vrabel of Highland; six grandchildren; Mark Abbott, Scott (Mary)

Abbott, Susan Abbott, Jenny Vrabel, Michael Vrabel and Eric Amendola; two great

grandchildren, Rachel and Nicholas Abbott; one brother, Joseph Vrabel of

Michigan; two sisters, Mary Polkinghorn of Nevada and Mayme Girdley of

Indianapolis. Preceded in death by his wife, Marie.

Funeral services Monday, December 23, 1996, 9:30 a.m. at the Kuiper

Funeral Home Chapel, with a Mass of Christian Burial being offered at 10 a.m.

Monday at Our Lady of Grace Church in Highland, with Rev. Edward Moszur

officiating. Burial at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Friends are

invited to meet with the family Sunday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kuiper

Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (2 blks south of Ridge Road), Highland,IN.

Mr. Vrabel was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church of Highland; member of

the Slovak Catholic Union; and retired from the Standard Oil Company of

Whiting, after 39 years service. Prayer service on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Gary, passed away in Valparaiso on Saturday, December 21, 1996.
