Charles T. Abbring
Charles T. Abbring, 88, of DeMotte, IN., passed away at St. Anthony's
Medical Center at 5:45 a.m. on Saturday December 21, 1996. He was born in
Kenner Twp. Jasper, Indiana on August 9, 1908 to the late Thomas and Nellie
Evers Abbring. Married June 17, 1938 in Crown Point, IN. to Alma A Bormann, who
survives. Attended DeMotte High School. Owner and operator of Martin's Gas
Station in DeMotte for 44 years. Lifetime member of American Reformed Church of
DeMotte and Charter member of DeMotte Town Board. Also survived by children,
Mrs. Ruth "Tootie" (William) Yates of Fair Oaks, IN., Chuck (Beverly) Abbring
and David (Paula) Abbring of DeMotte, IN.; seven grandchildren; six great
grandchildren; sisters Mrs. Olive Ooms and Mrs. Dorothy (Sam) Hamstra of
DeMotte, IN. and brother, Thomas (Mildred) Abbring of Wheatfield, IN. Preceded
in death by three brothers and three sisters.

Nellie Ann Bohling
Nellie Ann Bohling, 64, of Merrillville, passed away at Methodist Hospital
Southlake Campus on Saturday, December 21, 1996. She was a member of Our Lady
of Consolation Church, Merrillville. A member of Our Lady of Consolation Church
Women's Guild, the Vivian Society, the Hobart Elks Lodge #1152, the St. John
V.F.W. Post #717 Ladies Auxiliary. She had been active with the Girl Scouts
many years ago and had been an avid card player. Nellie is preceded in death by
one daughter, Donna, her parents and two brothers, Charles and Elden Hogan.
Nellie is survived by her beloved husband, Norbert V. Bohling of Merrillville.
She is also survived by her son James L. (Laura) Bohling Sr. of Norwalk, Iowa;
her daughter, Mary T. (Mike) Collins of Crown Point; five grandchildren, one
sister, Lois (Richard) Troup of Garland, Texas. Nellie is also survived by
many other relatives and close friends.

Edward J. Danko
Edward "Eddie" J. Danko, 53, of Griffith, IN. pased away Saturday,
December 21, 1996 at The Community Hospital, Munster, IN. He is survived by his
wife Linda "Lin" (nee Thorley); mother, Julia Danko of Selma, Alabama; six
children: Tom (Mayra) Danko of Jacksonville, FL., Jennifer Mayes of Lauderhill,
FL., Michael Danko and Michelle Danko both of Merrillville, Mark Sprengel of
Hammond and Michael (Brenda) Sprengel of Portage; two sisters, Dolores (Robert)
Ehrlich of Marion, IN. and Joey (Coy) Dillon of Selma, Alabama; father and
mother-in-law, Robert and Joyce Thorley of Hammond; several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Danko was a lifetime resident of the Calumet area. He retired in
December of 1996 from U.S. Steel Gary Works with 30 years of service as a roll
grinder in the roll shop. He was a U.S. Navy Vietnam veteran; member of South
Side Christian Church of Munster; andVietnam Veterans Association of
Merrillville. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the family would be appreciated.
Julius Elish, 77, of East Chicago, passed away Saturday, December 21,
1996 at St. Catherine Hospital. Survived by his wife of 50 years Kathryn Elish;
one daughter, Rebecca Elish of Crown Point; one son, Nick (Maryann) Elish of
Highland; three grandchildren, Katie, Jessica and Nicholas Elish; two brothers,
George (Lois) Elish of Highland and John Elish of Hammond; one sister, Mary
Berghian of Florida; and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends. Preceded in
death by parents, Nick and Lottie Elish, daughter, Roberta Lynn Elish, and two
brothers, Nick and Emil Elish.

Mary A. Grenchik (nee Hruskocy), 74, of Whiting, IN. passed away Sunday,

beloved husband of 51 years, George J. Grenchik; daughter Mary Ellen (Craig)
Kouris of Whiting; three sons, George (Marie) Grenchik of Calumet City, Stephen
(Nancy) Grenchik and Phillip (Maire) Grenchik, both of Whiting; ten
grandchildren: Mary Ellen, Joe, Lianne, Sandy, Steve, Scott, George, Craig,
Danny and Alison; sister, Margaret (late Mike) Skundrich of Whiting; brother,
Joseph (Virginia) Hruskocy of Whiting; seven sisters-in-law, Theresa Hruskocy,

Robert O. Hawkins, 57, of Merrillville, IN. passed away on Saturday,

Tony "TK" "KLAJ" Klaja, 18, of Hobart, IN. passed away Saturday, December
21 1996. A lifelong area resident. He was born September 16, 1978 in
Valparaiso, Indiana. Tony was an avid outdoors man. He played Hobart Little
League from age 8 to 15. Was pitcher for the Hobart High School Varsity
Baseball Team, pitched in the Babe Ruth Senior League World Series and also
pitched for the Hammond Chiefs. He is survived by his parents, Jerry and Nancy
Klaja of Hobart; one brother, Bryan Klaja at home; grandparents, Eileen and
Delos Swallow of Portage; aunts and uncles including Linda (Mike) Benka,
Charles (Ethel) Swallow, Thomas Swallow, Judith (Charles) Stempley and Linda

James R. Kocek
James R. Kocek, 73, of DeMotte, IN, passed away at St. Mary's Medical
Center, Hobart, IN. at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 21, 1996. He was born
October 13, 1923 in Chicago, IL. to the late Rudolph and Mildred Klinka Kocek.
A resident of the city since 1972. Mr. Kocek attended Chicago Public Schools.
He married Arlyne M. VanDrent on May 4, 1944 in Chicago, IL., she survives.
Also survived by daughters, Carol A. Corsello of Chicago, IL. and Diane "Dee
Dee" Brown of Calumet City, IL.; brothers, Robert (Delores) Kocek of Lagrange
Park, IL. and William (Verna) Kocek of Foster City, MI.
Mr. Kocek was manager at Howard Industries, East Chicago, IN. for 10
years. He was also at Calumet Construction in management. U.S. Marine veteran.
He was a member of Radio Lodge #1082, Chicago, IL., Sheet Metal Workers Local
#20 and member of DeMotte-KV Rotary Club. Memorials may be made to Disabled

Michael J. Livovich, 51, of Valparaiso, passed away Saturday, December
21, 1996 at Porter Memorial Hospital. He was born August 27, 1945 in East
Chicago, IN. the son of George and Helen (Kolanowski) Livovich. He graduated
from Hammond Morton High School in 1964 and then Indiana University with a
Business Degree. He was currently employed as Credit Manager for Azcon Corp. in
Chicago. On October 23, 1971 he married Christine Franyi who survives along
with two daughters, Jennifer Livovich and Erika Livovich, both of Valparaiso,
and two sisters, Jeanne (Frank) Martone of Crown Point and Barbara Bilen of

Harold W. Love, 97, of Lowell, IN. died Saturday, December 21, 1996. He

grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Edith in 1990.

was an avid sailor and snow skier.
Robert Petrovich, 68, formerly of Gary and a Merrillville resident for 26
years, passed away at Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus on Friday, December
20, 1996. Survived by two sons, Brian B. Petrovich of Ann Arbor, Michigan and
Brett J. Petrovich of Merrillville; sister-in-law, Rosemary Evans of
Merrillville; and many nieces, nephews and other loving relatives. Preceded in
death by his wife Barbara Ann Petrovich in 1994.

Eleanor Riley, 80, of Lansing, IL. passed away Sunday, December 22, 1996.
She is survived by one son, Rex of Walnut Creek, CA.; two brothers, Bob (Ella)
Strand of Shoreview, Minnesota and Carl Strand of Brea, CA. She was preceded in
death by her husband Rex, daughter, Judy, sister, Judith Kauppi and two
brothers, Clarence and Willard Strand.

Abbott, Susan Abbott, Jenny Vrabel, Michael Vrabel and Eric Amendola; two great
grandchildren, Rachel and Nicholas Abbott; one brother, Joseph Vrabel of
Michigan; two sisters, Mary Polkinghorn of Nevada and Mayme Girdley of
Indianapolis. Preceded in death by his wife, Marie.
Funeral services Monday, December 23, 1996, 9:30 a.m. at the Kuiper
Funeral Home Chapel, with a Mass of Christian Burial being offered at 10 a.m.
Monday at Our Lady of Grace Church in Highland, with Rev. Edward Moszur
officiating. Burial at Calumet Park Cemetery, Merrillville, IN. Friends are
invited to meet with the family Sunday 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Kuiper
Funeral Home, 9039 Kleinman Road (2 blks south of Ridge Road), Highland,IN.
Mr. Vrabel was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church of Highland; member of
the Slovak Catholic Union; and retired from the Standard Oil Company of
Whiting, after 39 years service. Prayer service on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m.

Gary, passed away in Valparaiso on Saturday, December 21, 1996.
