Man arrested for voyeurism
VALPARAISO -- A local man was arrested early Sunday after being chased down by
a neighbor who told police he saw the man looking in windows on Academy Street.
Michael D. Harper Jr., 24, of 405 Academy, Valparaiso, was questioned and taken
to the Porter County Jail on a voyeurism charge.
Harper told Valparaiso officers, who questioned why he had a black ski mask and
black leather gloves in his pocket, that he was just out walking around the
neighborhood. He told police he "may have looked in the windows before, but not
The neighbor told police he saw Harper, who he identified by the jacket he was
wearing and his face, circle the block and reappear. Reports said the neighbor
told police he saw Harper pull the mask over his face, flatten himself against
an Academy Street house and inch toward an unshaded window.
The neighbor said he ran after Harper, following him to Lafayette and
Jefferson, where he yelled for a bystander to call police and Harper stopped,
Speed contestant arrested
PORTAGE TWP. -- A man was arrested early Monday for taking part in a speed
contest on Samuelson Road, south of the Toll Road, Porter County Sheriff's
Department reports said.
Curtis D. King, 18, of 726 Fremont Road, Valparaiso, told police he was
approached by another man in Autozone who asked him if he wanted to race and he
said no. Then as he and his passengers were driving to South Haven on Samuelson
Road, the same man pulled up beside his Ford Mustang and again asked if he
wanted to race. According to reports. King then said, "What the heck."
The other car took off so King told police he put his car in gear and took off.
He was arrested for a misdemeanor speed contest charge and taken to the Porter
County Jail. His passengers were released to a parent.
Criminal mischief investigated
CHESTERTON -- Porter County police are investigating damage done to a forklift
at the Chesterton High School work site
John Perz, of Gariup Construction, the primary contractor at the high school,
reported to police Friday that the tires on the forklift had several holes
drilled in them.
According to reports, the forklift is being operated by laborers employed by
Gariup. Earlier in the week, the Operating Engineers business agent had called
saying the forklift should be operated by operating engineers.
The tires are valued at $300 each.
One injured in crash
PORTER -- A Lake Station man riding a new Harley Davidson motorcycle was
injured after he turned in front of an oncoming vehicle Saturday evening on
U.S. 20, Porter police said.
William E. Free, 43, was taken to Porter Memorial Hospital after the crash. He
was listed in stable condition.
Both he and the other driver, Connie Duncan, 41, of Michigan City, were
arrested for driving under the influence, police said.
Duncan, who was treated and released at PMH, told police she had just left the
Steel City gas station, just west of the intersection, and could not stop in
time to avoid hitting Free. Free told police he did not see Duncan's Cavalier
before making his turn, reports said.
CHESTERTON -- A 16-year-old was injured late Friday night after she fell off a
car and struck the ground.
Vanessa Slatton, of 370 E. 1400 N., Chesterton, was taken to Porter Memorial
Hospital by EMS.
According to Chesterton police reports, Slatton was riding on the hood of a car
driven by Brian R. Morphis, 18, of 442 N. 325 W., Valparaiso when he made a
turn near KFC, 381 Indian Boundary Road, causing her to fall and hit her head
on the ground.
Custody dispute leads to arrest
UNION TWP. -- A Valparaiso man was arrested for criminal recklessness with a
vehicle after telling Porter County Sheriff's Department police he
intentionally tried to run a woman's car off U.S. 30 Friday, reports said.
Bernard L. Lee Jr., told police he wanted his wife to have custody of her
4-year-old son for the weekend, not the driver of the other car, Sandra D.
Suttles, of R.R. 1, Shobonier, reports said.
Lee was taken to the Porter County Jail.
Valparaiso -- Lynn Hyatte reported Saturday someone spray painted her car while
it was parked in her driveway. A swastika also had been painted in front of the
driveway. Damage is estimated at $1,000.
Center Twp. -- David Moranelli of Portage reported Sunday the theft of a $629
trolling motor, two fish finders valued at $1,044 and a bow panel stolen from
his boat, which was stored at Off Shore Marina on U.S. 30 in Valparaiso.
Portage -- Heather R. Wilkie of Portage reported a $1,400 Craftsman riding
lawnmower stolen from her home.
Portage -- James A. Adams of Portage reported a 1984 Plymouth Voyager van and
miscellaneous items stolen, valued at $5,000 from his home.
Portage -- Sheila A. Pappas of Portage reported the theft of diamond, sapphire
and pearl rings, valued at $10,000, from her home.
Portage Twp. -- Kimberly A. Kleckner of Valparaiso reported Sunday the theft of
her son's $500 bicycle from near Haven Hollow Park.
Westchester Twp. -- Gregory D. Hume of Chesterton reported Sunday the theft of
Bubble Burners Custom-made golf club woods valued at $700, a Lynx set of irons
valued at $800, a $100 cell phone and a CD case containing CDs valued at $350
taken from the vehicles in his garage.
Jackson Twp. -- Judith A. Spierins of Valparaiso reported Sunday the theft of
her 1994 Dodge Caravan from North County Line Road, Westville. The van was
found running by Michigan City police stuck in the sand with the windows
Center Twp. -- Pat Johnson of Family Express on Burlington Beach Road reported
Sunday the theft of $15.15 of gas from a drive-off.
Center Twp. -- Judy Hagan of Fetla's on Ind. 2 reported Sunday the theft of a
Glock 9mm handgun, valued at $500, sometime between Feb. 19 and Saturday.
Reports said a 17-year-old former employee had been arrested with the gun in
his possession. The teen currently is in the Porter County Jail.
Portage Twp. -- Bruce Dawson, owner of Lil' Saver, reported Friday the theft of
two cartons of cigarettes. The suspect, caught on tape, was located and told
Porter County Sheriff's deputies he was desperate for money for his family. He
returned the cigarettes and agreed to never go back to the store.
Portage Twp. -- Lisa M. Pollock of Governor Road reported vandalism to her 1997
Ford Thunderbird. The windshield was shattered, the rear quarter window was
broken and a pick ax was found through the right portion of the roof. There
were also scratches on the right door window.
Pine Twp. -- Chantel M. Ruess of Michigan City reported her stereo/CD player
valued at $300, 150 CDs and T-tops to her car stolen.
Porter Twp. -- Vandalism was reported at Boone Grove High School. Juveniles had
fired paintballs at the Dumpster and the side of the school. Damage was
confined to the Dumpster area.
