Day 3: Day at the Dunes and dinner at Tyler’s Tender

With so many beautiful beaches in the region, it’s a great place to explore during your days off. More than likely, it will be too chilly to enjoy the water, but a couple hours of fun in the sand will help squash the cabin fever that will be setting in and wear out the little ones. Be sure to bring along some buckets, containers and shovels for digging and sculpting your sandcastles.

Also, bring along boots to enjoy a hike through the dunes as the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore includes 45 mies of trails. Throw a kite in the car and take advantage of that springtime wind and grab the binoculars for some birdwatching.

Finish the day with a family-friendly meal at Tyler’s Tender in Schererville, a train-themed restaurant with a real choo-choo you can ride, a model one that you can gaze at and a train that winds around the counter and delivers your burgers and pizza via traincar. There’s also a small arcade to keep the kids occupied while they wait for food. Grown-ups will be pleased with the nice menu selections that go way beyond kid fare.
