This is from the Times' article:
"Katona said most cases of owners with too many homestead credits arise when houses are bought for rental income. She said her office constantly is eliminating ineligible credits, but her staff can't catch all nestled within the county's more than 235,000 total properties now receiving credits."
I personally do not know how one "applies" for the Homestead Exemption or whether that is done in the paperwork in a home closing, etc. The point is that she is not the only one this has ever happened to - if she wanted to cheat the government, I'm sure she is smart enough to find a way that would be less detectable. Come on, now.
Pretty sure she paid that back, promptly, when it was discovered.
It happens all the time when homes are purchased as rental properties. They stay attached from the previous owners.
She's an arrogant tax cheat because the Auditor's office didn't catch the homestead exemptions? Yeah, sounds right. If you are going to be that way, you might as well start throwing the name calling at Madame Auditor, too.
She's worked very hard throughout the years for the Party, continues to do so as Recorder, and she deserved another term. Focusing on HOW she ended up as our Recorder is counter-productive - what matters is the work she did and improvements she made while she was there. She did a lot more than some before her.
Now we are stuck with a 28 year old ex-correctional officer who has absolutely no clue what he is doing. What is he going to do for the department and County during his term? I just hope his puppeteer knows what he is doing ... so that the whole office doesn't COMPLETELY go down in flames
It really is sad that the ignorance of the Lake Co. voters lost her this election.
