We need alternative schools to house these kids. They need to be removed from the general population and dealt with in a controlled environment where they can have access to education, remediation and the mental heath services on a daily basis. If the schools can't control them and the parents refuse to raise them, then the need to placed in a secure environment that specializes in working with "at-risk" youths. It would be a heck of alot more cost effective to educate, monitor and treat these kids in an "alternative school" now, then it will be to house them in maximum security prisons later. They need to be stopped before they do anymore damage to themselves or society. This would include teen mothers and the baby-daddy's as well. Any "child" whose future is at risk.

There are plenty of successful charter schools across the state of Indiana. Their just not here. Please, conduct your due diligence before you speak. The reason why these local charter schools failed is a direct result of a lack of oversight and governance by the charter authorizer and the local charter school organizing boards. Check out charter schools like Herron, Signature, Basis, Christel House and Phalen .....and then get back to me.

Why not take Purdue Academic Center and covert it into either a traditional public school school for students who live south of Route 30, or even a public charter school.Lets deal with the reality that most families leave Merrillville in search of safer neighborhoods and better schools - that is the bottom line. How many families, students and tax dollars has the town of Merrillville lost to neighboring communities Crown Point, Valparaiso and Schererville? Why not trying giving these families "incentives" to stay instead of reasons to leave.

Hermes13 - Please, do your due diligence before you speak! There are exceptional charter schools that are far superior to many of our local public school, they just don't exist here, nor would they ever consider coming to Northwest Indiana. Check out BASIS Charter Schools, Signature, Herron and International Baccalaureate Schools. After which, you may just want to retract your previous statement. You have an extra special day!
