1. Moochie,

First, this wasn't a Dem's idea. This line was designated as a future high speed rail line by President George H W Bush, along with 4 other lines back in 1992. In other words, this is a Republican idea. The Dems only wrote the check to fund it.

Second, the Republican controlled legislature in Michigan, along with their Republican Governor just brought 100 miles of track within Michigan to further high speed service.

Third, it's not just about Detroit. The train serves many other places in Michigan. In fact, more than 880,000 people took Amtrak trains to some point in Michigan.

Fourth, this also improves passenger train service to points in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, & DC.

Fifth, this improves freight service in the area. That means that more freight can now be moved by train, resulting in lower costs to us consumers since anything moved by truck costs more.

  2. Actually only 3 governors returned any money, and then they only returned the stimulus money for trains. They weren't concerned about the debt one bit when they gleefully accepted the Stimulus monies for highways and other things. In fact, two of the governors returning monies tried to keep it for the roads.

And the Wisconsin governor after returning the initial funding had the nerve to ask for some of it back later on for the trains.

And Florida's Governor was soundly rebuked by a veto proof majority in the State Senate for his foolish decision to return the money. Sixteen Republican State Senators crossed the aisle to join with 10 Democratic Senators in both rebuking the Governor and trying to find a way around him to go ahead with the project. They even took him to court.

  3. Wrong Mymy!

This project was thought up and designated as a High Speed Rail line by the George H W Bush White House, which back in 1992 designated this line, California's line, Florida's line, and 2 other corridors as High Speed Rail Corridors and therefore eligible for federal funding.

    It was a Conservative's idea!

  4. FRA rules for running at 110 MPH require quad-gates at all crossings.

And aside from the fact that the Amtrak engines cannot do much better than 110 MPH, except maybe running downhill, the FRA required Positive Train Control or PTC would never permit the scenario you've related to happen with these trains. Any engineer going more than 3 or 4 miles over the speed limit for more than a few seconds will quickly find the computers applying the emergency brakes and disengaging the throttle.
