  2. Here is the problem: Teaching has now become the only occupation in the world for which one does NOT need training! McDonalds=training, post office=training, casino=2 weeks or more of training, cutting hair=training, cutting dog's hair=training. How are these people going to be trained before entering the classroom? When are they goting to be trained an more importantly...by whom? I can't even get an aide for my room much less text books, paper or computers! I barely had anyone show me the ropes my first year. Thank goodness I at least had some classroom observations and student teaching to help me through! The love for your subject will only get you as far as the door, but what will you do once you get inside? Good luck to all those that just got a twinkle in their eye from this news! I hope the State of Indiana doesn't mess you up to bad! Best of Luck.

  3. I am a teacher and this is my forth year (I'm 36). I wanted to be a teacher right out of HS but I went and ventured out into different careers. I'm thankful that I did that because I feel it made me a better teacher than I would have been just comming out of HS. I'm also thankful for those classes that I took in college that taught me how to lesson plan, gave me tips on how to manage a class and how to time manage for a class. My professors may not have been awesome all the time, but I took the best of what they did know and carried it with me into the classroom. One professor was so smart as to tell us students that, "Just because you love math, reading or science doesn't mean you will be great at teaching it because it's not as easy at that and your love of the subject will only carry you in through the door." I am also VERY thankful for student teaching! It was eye opening! I knew I wanted to be a teacher but not really until I got into the classroom and experienced it through classroom observations and student teaching. I sat in the back of those teacher's classrooms and came up with ideas, management skills the college classroom could have never taught me and what I was in for! I've also mentored some college students the last couple of years that needed to have classroom hours and have came to me and said, "I'm glad I did this because I learned that I love it!", and I had 2 students say, "I can't do this". Nothing truly prepares you for being a teacher because education is always changing but having those classes and student teaching experience, I feel are necessary to becoming a teacher. Experience is everything! But I know that if I were to change to becoming a nurse I would hope that they would prep me and put me in a hospital before I WAS actually in the job to see it the job fit. I'm not saying this will totally destroy our education program but man! I know from experience that having student teaching and some classes to learn from before getting my job HELPED me! Pipefitters and electricians even have to become an apprentice before they can do their job. I know it sounds silly, but even in the TV show Undercover Boss, teaches us that you have to have experience to better yourself , your career and those around you. The excelerated teaching program before this was a great idea! It said hey, you have life experience and we want you! Go to school for a couple of classes, go into a classroom to get a feel and we will allow you to get your license faster than the 5 years it takes those straight out of HS. Why change it? Why couldn't they wait until Glenda came in to say something about it? Why?
By the way,my gross last week was is 1,395.88 my net was 1,031.22 _ I teach in Northwest Indiana...an urban school. It's a challenge but it is better than the casino, hotels, photography, waitressing and other jobs that I have had. I still wouldn't change it but I gotta tell you, this hearts my heart for me, but mostly for my two sons that may have to endure this "corporate america education attitude" for their future.
P.S. DEAR STATE OF INDIANA, CAN YOU PLEASE PAY BACK MY STUDENT LOANS OF 2 YEARS FROM DURING THE TIME I WAS TAKING TEACHER EDUCATION CLASSES AND HAD TO LIVE OFF MY LOANS WHILE I STUDENT TAUGHT AND WAS NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE A JOB SINCE IT IS NO LONGER NECESSARY TO HAVE THAT EDUCATION ANYMORE~ I FEEL IT SHOULD BE PAID BACK TO ME NOW!
