- I understand many people's misunderstanding of how the voucher system works...but the money does not fund private schools. It's a subsidy, that taxpayers would be paying anyway to send the child to a public school. The money is provided to allow the parents a choice beyond just the local public school. This program is not costing you, me, or anyone else in Indiana a dime more to educate the child than before. It actually could cost us less, as the current cap on the voucher is $4500. If the child is in a public district that costs more than $4500 to educate the child, the voucher program is a bargain for the taxpayers.
