  1. I am surprised and quite disappointed that the Times chose to run this piece. Rich James is not new to the "news" business, but quite obviously has failed miserably in the basic fundamentals of journalism. A tiny bit of elementary research would show Mr. James that you cannot LEGALLY purchase fully automatic weapons of ANY kind at your basic gun show. Full Automatic weapons were banned from general sale to the public with the passing of the National Firearms Act of 1934 and the restricted sale of these items is HEAVILY controlled by the government. Further, the Gun Control Act of 1968 deepens the restrictions. But, Mr. James is typical of the anti-gun movemnet who use fear tactics to brainwash an ignorant public. And to the point made above, the definition of "Assault Weapon" was made by the military to define weapons used for acts of war based on selective fire (meaning full auto) capabilities. Our ignorant and sometimes deceptive journalists use the term "Assault Weapon" to bolster fear in the minds of people who do not know the difference.
Having spent over 30 years in the firearms arena as an instructor for a counter-terrorist government agency, and now as a trainer for several major firearms manufactures, I find writers like Rich James the true threat to American Freedom. Shame on the Times for supporting this attack on our Constitutional rights. Maybe we should start to attack your 1st Amendment rights and demand Mr. James be silenced until he quits lying to the public.
