There are other technological approaches being developed, notably Fiberight in Iowa City, Iowa; Fulcrum outside of Reno, Nevada; Coskata in Green County Alabama and Enerkem in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Earl Powers has licensed the technology being used by IneosBio in Vero Beach Florida. Both Enerkem and IneosBio are fully build and undergoing startup tests. IneosBio has produced ethanol, has tested all components and is presently integrating all components for continuous operation.
The amount of effort needed to start a new commercial operation of a new technology should not be underestimated. Financing is very difficult in these economic times but more importantly the ability to execute logistically difficult projects must be there. When I met Earl Powers two years ago, I questioned him as to why he selected the technology he did. I thought his reasoning was sound and correct. It should be noted that his licensing agreement was with the original developer, so as an early mover he probably got a favorable license arrangement that should not be lost. I did have my doubts about the depth of his orginazation to execute such a difficult project.
We all learn from our missteps as we advance into the future. The technology is there and with perseverance Lake county has a chance at being the first large scale waste to energy in the country.
