  1. Carl Spackler? That's Bill Murray's character in Caddyshack.

  2. At least we know Munster has not changed since you were there. I think this whole event was staged to divert attention from the board approving the referendum so they don't have to put the GT students in a classroom with the underachievers (aka - normal kids).

  3. To all of you who are critical of Ms. Brailey's comments, why don't you set out from behind your "screen name" and make your case. Nationalized health care is, and has been, a very polorizing topic for many years. The fact that such a huge program was pushed through so quickly has many people wondering what it really contains.
The worst part about ObamaCare is that he won't be around to deal with the costs. Our leaders (including Visclosky) made sure the true costs of the program would not be felt until they were out collecting their government pension (and seperate health care program). Which brings another point. If the program is so good, why isn't it being mandated for all federal and state employees?

  4. When I went to the meeting, they took my name and email address so I could get feedback to my questions. So far, no response to my questions, but they already voted to do the referendum. I guess they only needed my email address so they could remind me to pay my taxes after the vote.

  5. Isn't it interesting that the state formula is set up to reward schools systems that perform poorly and cut the schools where they know the community will step up? All of the top performing schools have seen their funding cut and are being forced to dig deeper into the taxpayers' pockets to keep up. Schools that are not performing are being rewarded with more money, even though there is no evidence that this money has done anything to improve the education of those children.
Munster already has a higher tax rate than other communities that have passed a funding referendum. Don't ask Munster residents to continue to fork out cash, fix the system that got us here. When I'm done paying for swimming pools, football stadiums, restaurants, etc., then come back and ask for more.

  6. So let's get this straight. Taxes go up, thus people what to move to Munster?
Are these the same people who moved out of Illinois to get away from the taxes.

  7. If these children are truly "gifted by God", why do they need special treatment? The board was not proposing to "kick the talented children to the side of the road" unless you are saying they already are doing this to the rest of the kids who struggle just to get by.

  8. At least the truth came out last night. The referendum isn't about funding for "all" students, it's about funding for the top 10% who are in the GT program. As Mr. Friend stated in his closing comments, if this doesn't pass, all the smart kids will need to go into classes with the rest of the school.
The class sizes for the GT group are already the smallest in the elementary schools, plus when they break out for GT programs the class size for each group goes down to 10 or 12.
The consultant did a fine job distorting the truth (adjusting scales on charts, hand picking comparisons), but he still admits they will likely come back for more down the road.
I respect the teachers for foregoing raises to maintain jobs. They are not grossly overpaid and in most cases work hard for the students. We need to go after the real problem which is the distribution of state funding. "Several" town board members were in attendance, but we didn't even get an apology from our state representative or senator.
It's time for Munster and our elected officials to go to bat for the entire community not just the few privileged children.

  9. Yes, Munster, Lake Central, Crown Point all are near the bottom in state funding. So why not do something about that. Maybe the answer is adding a $0.22 per $100 surcharge on Gary, East Chicago, Hammond to help make up the difference in funding for the other schools.
If I was planning to sell my house in the next 10 years, why would I want to explain why the property taxes are the highest in the state.
    Once again, fix the system!

  10. Once again we Munster has taken the approach that everyone can affort to pay more. The formula is too complicated to figure out, so let's just raise taxes again! We're already paying over 50% more than the state 1% tax cap. Now they want to add another 10% (their calculation not mine) on top of that.
I have children in the Munster schools. I pay for books, laptops, field trips, fundraisers, etc., yet other school districts have the money to give this away free. We should have people fighting the system rather than digging into our pockets.
I've written letters to my representatives and get the standard "thanks for your input". More taxes is not the answer!
