  1. I will say good job on the chief's part for observing a burglary in process. I would hope that any officer seeing a crime in progress would do the same. However I will say that a chief's duty is not being out in patrol. A chief should be brainstorming and coming up with ideas on how to deal with or fix the department's shortfalls.

Resident Too, I will agree with you about filing charges and clear communication. But remember that every officer's report has to be checked by their immediate supervisor when it's turned in. Then it is checked once again by a lieutenant or commander. Maybe the officer made a mistake. What about the other two? So perhaps everybody is incompetent? Or is it a result of the "stat padding" days of Chief of Detectives Lance Huish? Making officers change the classification of their reports to criminal investigations, just so a domestic battery or sexual offense wouldn't tarnish Merrillville's statistics. All these little things have led to improper training and practices. These practices are currently plaguing MPD.

Oh and as far as officers sitting around for hours. Get a clue as to what's really going on. I highly doubt anybody is down talking their department. I'm sure most of their topics are based on facts. Incompetent decisions made by the powers that be. Decisions that have any sane, competent person asking why oh why.

  2. This another excellent suggestion. Not only a psychological test but also a general knowledge test. There are chiefs in Lake County that couldn't form a sentence properly nor could they spell.

  4. This article gave me a good laugh. Especially Guernsey's quote "I should've caught that". So for all you older cats like myself, let's take a trip down memory lane. December 24, 1991, the Post Tribune wrote a story titled COP ACCUSED OF MISUSING MONEY CHARGES INVOLVE ANTI-DRUG FUNDS. Guess who the cop was? Cpl Eugene Guernsey. And if you really want more answers then just google away. Guernsey was later cleared because it was determined that he was "bad with numbers". Either misusing funds or bad with numbers, do you really want this guy managing the town's finances? You all can answer that. It's no wonder Merrillville is always in financial trouble.

  5. Vacant apartments would be great. That alone would alleviate plenty of crime in Merrillville. When we first moved to Crescent Lake years ago it was a great subdivision. Thanks to all the rental units on Whitcomb we had to move prematurely and on my old Merrillville salary that was almost catastrophic. Resident Too based on your comments I am assuming you are one of the geniuses that have helped Merrillville reach it's all time low. How about you tag along with me for a day at my current job to get an idea of how things are done in the real world.

  6. Does this really surprise anybody? Merrillville officials have a history of making horrible decisions. Just look at the decision they made to have Joe "I'm the chief" Petruch in charge of the police department. That alone speaks for itself. But on a more serious matter the police department has been budgeted for 54 officers for years. They received a grant for three extra officers, so that means there should've been 57 officers if I do my math correctly. However their numbers have been ranging between 46-48 for the last few years. Why?

  7. Perhaps this is one of those instances where your fearless leader should step up and display an example of that word he loves to use yet can't pronounce or understand, integrity.

  8. Let's see. The Merrillville Police Department is budgeted for 54 officers. There are currently 46 officers. This number has been the same for quite some time. That's 9 lines of expenses that are unaccounted for? Where is that money being rerouted to? And as far as the chief goes he will say and agree to anything as long as he can keep his job. Keep it up and your force will be down to 30 officers soon.
