- If you're looking someone to blame for growing hunger and homelessness in the region, I'd suggest you look at your elected officials in Lake and Porter county as well as your local mayors, town councils, Chambers of Commerce. What have they done in the last 20 years to attract economic development & good paying jobs? If you work in retail, restaurants, nursing homes, hotels, you can't keep up with the local cost of living & will need help with your basic needs. Do you realize how many Walmart employees the taxpayers are supporting even while Walmart stockholders complain about their dividends?
