College is not only about the education one receives; it's also about what happens outside the classroom, in the dorms, extracurricular activities, etc. Due to the high cost of a college education, many students will attend the college that will give them the most to have them, especially if they are anticipating postgraduate education. Indiana universities do not give much incentive to keep top students. Ryan finished #1 in his class, Lindsay finished in the top 5, Lindsay's two friends were in the top 10. Her two friends were also National Merit Finalists, both were accepted at top universities [Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Duke] but chose to attend Alabama. Alabama's current freshman class has 239 NMF, the most of any universities in the US, therefore I would not say it was not academically challenging.
