  3. Charter School of the Dunes is a decent option for kids in our area. There has been tremendous progress made over the past 4 years. Don't let the letter grade or past leadership contaminate your judgment about what is currently going on in that building. Though the school may not look like much on the outside,  on the inside, the school has something that I appreciate...heart and passion for kids.
But before you judge the school, I'd like to ask, have you visted there in the past year? Not 5,4,3,2 years ago, THIS YEAR. I sure hope so, because adults know better than to make assumptions without seeing things for themselves. Right? But, if you haven't visited, are you aware of what's really going on there? Of course not. Are you aware that the school buys uniforms, shoes, and supplies for LOTS of students who may have a tough financial situation? Are you aware that they take ALL students and don't charge book rental fees? Are you aware that the reason they are building a new building is because students have to walk outside to get from building to building in the rain and snow? Are you aware that CSOTD made ISTEP gains in the double digits last year? Maybe you are aware or maybe not. But if you aren't, you should be before you blast the school. It is time for us as a community, a county, a state, and a nation to realize that this battle that CSOTDis facing is one that urban schools are facing all over the nation. When will we stop bashing one another and unite to do what's best for the children, all children? CSOTD doesn't make excuses on why they are not achieving, even with one of the highest percentage of special education students in the area, the staff still does not make excuses, they figure out a way to make things better and in time, I think, we, the community will see the results to be more than we ever imagined. What you might hear from their staff and school community is that they've got a long way to go, but are committed to giving their students the opportunity to reach their highest potential.
