  1. I can see doing this periodically, say Memorial and Veteran's Day, or signifying the end of a military conflict.

But every night? It's morbid. Even those of us with loved ones who have fallen in the line of duty must go on. Hearing "taps" every single evening would keep me in tears and mourning over and over again. I wouldn't be able to sleep or ever get away from it, to move on. Please don't do this, Mr. Mayor.

  2. You hit the nail on the head--Piunti was moved from a position he excelled at to a position he couldn't do as well as others in order to set him up to fail.

    Utterly, utterly sleazy!

  3. Yeah, kale and acorn squash demos won't pack 'em in, but I guess I'd like to know what the heck to do with them ;) Agree that boosting commercialism is needed for downtown merchants, but fail to see how boosting a no-longer-downtown hospital and a never-was-downtown popcorn company will get this done.

You're right, the place is one giant billboard to swelled heads. They still need to be told it's tacky.

    And I'm essentially Valposince 1973.

  4. The bands in 2011 were great--a real variety! In 2012, however, it was blah. I can see having a couple of orchestra-type performances in a season. But there should be more jazz, rock, folk, blues, and ethnic groups like the last scheduled one in 2011, where dozens of people learned the salsa and there were people dancing all over, not just down by the stage. Those were relaxed and happy gatherings, and they were open to everyone, too.

When that ugly old building across the street came down, there was suddenly a beautiful, open view of the county administration building--the terrific architecture couldn't be appreciated before, as the best vantage point is from the middle of the park and close to Lafayette Street. It would be a shame to block it again with a market/skating pavilion, at least where it looks like they are planning to build it. Would it hurt to locate the pavilion closer to the parking lot, and leave the space between it and the ampitheater nice and open and green--like a park?

The farmer's market vendors can use improvement, but that might happen when the pavilion is built. There's a veggie vendor on Calumet near Evans who offers a big variety, and would be good for the market. The current vendors all pretty much offer exactly the same things, and none of them offer much in the way of, say, early season veggies like radishes, spring onions, lettuces, and such. What about a seasonal cooking demo, showing people what they can do with kale or acorn squash or such? Decide what you want the market to be known for--food or crafts. Work with the restaurants to bring in what they want to use, too--wasn't there once an effort to create a year-round market in the old Sears building by the downtown restaurant owners? It might be economically feasible for the vendors if they came in for the restauranteurs and the public was allowed access, too, at similar prices--which would be a real draw for the public. Or something like that.

The Orville statue is good work, but it's creepy where it's located. It is also another obeisance to commercialism, just like the garish hospital sign above the stage. Tacky tacky tacky, like the self-promotion brass plaques on the arbor posts. Yes, it's all well and good that the park was done with the contributions of these ventures and individuals, but enough is enough already, people. The park is a classy concept, and a gracious one--let's not ruin it with poorly-disguised billboards.

These are my major beefs with the park so far, but don't get me wrong, I love the place and I want to see it flourish. The little kids playing in the splash pad and running on the grass is a joy to see all summer long, and brings much-needed non-commercial life to the downtown.
