  1. It takes the same 4 years.

If people want easy degrees that pay less than $30K a year after graduation then they should not be getting loans for them.

With all the free time from the easy degree they should be working to pay their bills and not using loans.

  2. I would say go to the cheapest in-state school with accreditation for your degree.
You dont get anything special by paying more to go to a private school like Rose-Hulman than going to Purdue Calumet or West Lafayette.

But something like engineering you can graduate and get a starting job between $50K to 100K depending on the company and location. So you can go to a more expensive private school if you want as you can afford it.

  3. They were not ignorant of the loan terms.
They were ignorant of how worthless their choice of major is.

  4. Student loans need to be for only certain majors that statistically pay well and are in demand.
If you choose a worthless major then you should not be able to get a loan.
If qualifying for a loan was dependent on a degree choice then most the problems we are having will go away.

  6. @mill
That is irrelevent. The only way to pay back your loans is getting a job that will give you a good career. Choose engineering and you can easily pay back your loans, choose sociology and you will never pay back your loans.

Basically never pick a worthless major.

A college student can look in advance to see what they will most likely make at a job that degree gets you before choosing the degree.

  7. Only certain degrees like engineering, chemistry, nursing, medical, accounting, teaching (if you go to a cheap school) will get you ahead.

Getting $100K a in loans for a sociology, psychology, forestry, liberal arts, etc degree is just stupid as you wont get a job that pays enough to pay back your loans.

  8. @cman,
We already have a sensible and affordable solutions to pay for college.
We have unlimited unrestricted students loans that someone can get in a days if needed.

It is 100% on the student to choose a major that they know will get them a good paying job so they can afford to pay their loans off.

The problem is these stupid students rack up $40K+ or even $100K+ in debt to get degrees that they know wont get them a job. Basically non-teaching liberal arts degrees like sociology or psychology. You will never pay back your $100K in debt with one of those.

Now if you get a degree that actually gets you a job like an engineering degree, chemistry, accounting, etc then you should be able to start getting $45K to 70K right after graduation, but be able to move over 6 figures (at todays money) over your career and easily pay your loans back within 5 to 10 years.

The only way to stop the problem is to restrict which majors can get student loans. We need to stop giving out loans for majors we know wont get the person a job to pay them back.
You can check out the job statistics here: www.onetonline.org
Our government already tracks this info, but no one uses it.

  9. Why is Annie getting a sociology degree and taking on debt to do it?
She already knows there are no jobs for that degree. Why do people do this to themselves??
