The Corp. number was down so your statement is not untrue but does not negate the issue of overcrowding at the high school. Enrollment is going to fluctuate from year to year.
The IDOE has the High School enrollment for 2009 - 3166; 2010-3225; 2011-3257. The school was originially built for 1900 students then expended to accommodate 2600 - with enrollment at approx. 3200 - the high school IS overcrowded by 600+ students.
Don't get me wrong - I did not support this referendum as I believe a deconsilidation was necesssary, not another expansion but please don't make it sound like nothing should have been done or that online classes & non-'brick and mortar' ideas would have solved the issue of overcrowding.
See how ridiculous this all is? So many more important issues in education.
Not complaining - just informing so we are all on the same page.
They are longer than a normal bus with individual seating and have storage compartments on the exterior.
Yes, I would compare what I could see to a coach bus.
Which are there more of - people who educate themselves or people who don't? Unfortunately - I believe it is the latter so when the voters see these 'fancier' busses around town - don't you think they are going think "This is where my money is going? I thought it was going toward more classrooms/updated facilities".
It has nothing to do with where the funds came from. I am not saying that busses (in general) aren't needed and that the students don't deserve something nice.
If you have specific information about the purchase, please share.
My guess, yes, admittedly a guess would be though, more people will think the following -
*Instead of X amount of dollars (regardless of where the money comes from) being spent on 4 busses of this caliber, could that same X amount of dollars have been spent on let's say, 6 new regular busses or used to upgrade/maintain 25 busses that are used on a daily routes, not just on transportation to/from extra curricular events?* -
than would think "the purchase of these buses was completely feasible & not over the top" as you stated.
My complaint is not with the LC schools themselves, they are doing the best with what they are provided, it is with the board and administration.
To me, it is a poor decision to give the appearance of extravagance, when you just got the voters of the Tri-Town area to invest this very large amount of money in capital projects - not saying something didn't need to be done (although I don't agree with the avenue that was chosen).
I think adequate, not what may be deemed as posh purchases are what should be made at this time when all schools are strapped for cash - even though the funding sources may be different. It just gives those who were against or on the fence about the referendum some justification because it is an example of what some may view as unwise spending, which could carry over into other areas of spending.
Why spend more on a lesser number when you can possibly get more for less, especially at this time?
The outward appearance of these busses, regardless of the funding source, sure doesn't make it look like the district is hurting & only draws attention, again IMO.
They are not 'losing' time together. It would be the same amount of time whether you end in the middle of June & start later in August or if you start earlier in August and end earlier in June. I am guessing a good number of people wanting a later start date are involved in activities that go to the end of July, beginning of August.
You can choose to spend your given amount of time on vacation/time with the family or you can choose to spend it on other activities leaving only a small window of time for your vacation. It is all in the choices.
I am a huge advocate for family time and not the biggest fan of the LC administration but as someone else has stated before, please ask a teacher. Some of you say it is no big deal to take tests after Christmas break. When you have to take time to review instead of being able to start on a fresh semester, a couple of days of instruction time can be a big deal with the mandatory testing and evaluation that needs to be completed throughout the year.
I find it humorous too, that only LC is being mentioned here. There are other schools whose start date was prior to that of LC's and it didn't seem to be an issue for them. There are so many other issues at LC that are of more importance and this is the battle that was chosen??
Thank you! I am glad I am not the only one who has thought this. He was only there two years and knew a reconstructed high school was coming - one that he could mold and guide but chose to leave - that says a lot to me!
