  1. On some of the issues, unless personal IDENTIFYING info is given, it is NOT a HiPPA violation! I know this because for over 10+ yrs, I had to take a boring 4hr class every year so I knew what was or was not HIPPA violation & what would happen. As for MEDICALLY NECESSARY Csections, no one is saying anything about those. Obviously you are in a higher risk, it isn't a concern. It is the Hospital that won't allow that 3rd VBAC due to legal problems or the Dr. that wants to induce early for the pt request. If a doc has DOCUMENTATION of a high risk or that labor would be dangerous, obviously that is fine. It is the routine ELECTIVE csections that are the more the concerns. Women can have children after a c-section. Many do not want to go through the labor, pain & not knowing and many can find a dr who may indulge them. Not all are like this but you have to realize that C-sections carry an enormous risk to a baby & the mother. Many times fluid is not out of the lungs enough & a baby has to be on oxygen or ventilator until the fluid resolves. There is infections, bleeding, adverse reactions you have to take in consideration for just a routine C-section. The group has EVERY right to let women know that there ARE options. Whether they picket out front or you see a brochure, it's the same except you see the actual person telling you! Quit harping on the oh, they shouldn't be doing this because of this. Every one is entitled to their opinion and I whole heartedly support that, as long as the facts are straight. I have worked in the medical field to have seen enough and know that hospitals limit drs & drs tell hospitals, it is about time the patient start deciding what they want & it is up the Dr to advocate for them unless medically necessary to have a C-section!!!

  2. I applaud the families taking a more direct approach about their care. Why shouldn't groups educate people about their rights? Do you think everyone is as educated about their rights? I really resent some of the comments on here. I have had 4 children at two of the area hospitals and do you think any of my nurses told me what my rights were? Being in labor, I don't think I remembered much before the birth!!! The only time my birth experience was exceptional was when I had nursing students there & one of them did everything Ms. Bauer stated & if I said no to something & the nurse questioned it, the student backed me up. The father didn't, because he didn't know my rights. I'm not saying this happens everywhere, but it happens more than you think. As a matter of fact, a doctor allowed a woman I know to be induced 7 days early so that she would have a baby on a certain date. Due to the medications used & the contractions, a Csection was performed because the baby went into distress. Some of the hospitals have a cannot induce before a certain time. The number of csections are quite concerning and should concern many who are going to deliver there. That is a extraordinary amount and should be looked into. Maybe even have like St. Anthony's no inducing before 39 wks!

  3. Also, about the Retirees? They worked just as hard & should be compensated for their hard work. I realize the costs are rising & so forth, but to dump these later yr adults because you don't want to pay for them? What would the younger generation say about you if you were Union? Would you want that to happen to you? Would be a different story I bet! Not to mention, many retirees have many health problems because they worked in the Mill. They need health care just like anyone else & I for one have no problem supporting them. Another way to look at it, if it were your father would you want to see him going through it? I surely hope some of the opinions doesn't reflect our future because I really see such a not hopeful future or at least happy one for many years later.

  4. I am amazed by the lack of empathy or respect on here. I realize this may be "old fashioned" thinking, but at least people can agree to disagree with other people's opinions! I don't agree with some who posted, but they can state how they feel without being so spiteful!

Having said that, I have worked for Union & Non-Union jobs. I respect those who have stayed in an Union job because at any time a contract comes up, they have no idea if they will have a job once the deadline passes! These men & women are hoping that these officials will do what is needed to protect & earn them a fair contract. It is not THEIR fault if the Union Officials have their own agenda. You can sit here all day long & blame them for not "seeing" what was coming, yada yada yada. These men & women EARN every flippin dollar they make. I have seen conditions at Mittal, Inland, etc. and they are not pleasant working conditions. Like one post stated, if your relief doesn't show up, unless they can find you one..you were stuck in whatever position. It's extreme heat in the summer, drafty & cold in the winter, dusty, around caustic materials anytime your around there, working your tail off hoping & praying every 4 yrs you still have a job. If anyone believes they have a "cushy" job there, unless you are higher up, you are not very informed. Not to mention the health problems you have if you make it to a retired age. I understand they "chose" this job, but sometimes you have to do what you can to feed your family!! There are good & bad sides to every job or Union. I agree with another post that stated that everything changes & nothing can stay the same if you want to excel in this world. Adapt or be ran over. It's a catch 22 anyway you look at it. All you can do is if you are Union, pray they do the best by you. If your not, then appreciate what you do have & don't yank their chain and vice versa. Our steel mills at one point were what MADE NW Indiana what it is, now due to our changing economy over the years we are losing them. You have to think about it in these terms also, if the steel mills close, what will happen to NW Indiana? My father, Grandfather, various other family worked in the mills. My Uncle lost his life due to mesothelioma from the steel mills. Do you see me hating them for what happened. No, because hating them or anyone else won't change anything except make things more difficult. I just hope the Union & Mill will come to agreement that satisfies both parties & if not reached by midnight, everyone is not locked out. God Bless you all & have a great day!
