- I see this conversation may be getting out of control based on biased comments on a personal level. As a former PHS soccer player that has played at the regional ODP level, Northwest United, Select and a representative of a US National team that participated in the Yorkshire and Holland Cup overseas I have had the wonderful opportunity to form my own personal opinion of Mr. Hutchins and what he brings to the table in reference to developing young men as upstanding citizens, students and soccer players. I'm of no relation to Coach Hutchins. His children were underclassmen while I was a student athlete at PHS. I had all the talent in the world, with an attitude that completely contradicted my on the field play. I recall a conversation one day where Mr. Hutchins approached me to discuss my on and off the field actions. He is a very upfront and honest person. Our conversation left me puzzled at first as even my head coach allowed me total reign of the team without consequence which certainly stunted my growth as a player and man. Mr. Hutchins explained how these actions would affect me as I grew older and it was at that point I changed. Parents these days, due to numerous external factors, whether it be absence, substance abuse, neglect or lack of parental knowledge sometimes can't raise a child to become a productive member of society. This is why a good coach can be such a positive influence on a young man's life. He gave me direction and there was certainly no fluff as to what he had to say to me. This is what I needed, what a majority of kids need today. Even when my own coach couldn't get through to me, Mr. Hutchins did. He is a tough man, but fair and has nothing but good intentions for these children. I left Indiana ten years ago after graduating from Purdue and currently work for the US Department of Defense in Florida and to this day can remember our conversation. This man had a direct impact on the direction of my life. Coaching isn't always about winning. I know from personal experience as my first run as a high school coach left me with two winless seasons, but it also helped me become a creator of men. Boys that transformed from disprectful poor students to eligible players that only addressed me as Sir and Coach. Kids that created off the field programs to donate their time at the local homeless shelter, children's hospital and free youth soccer camps. It's an honor to see the work you've accomplished with these children even if the score board doesn't reflect the impact you've had upon these young lives. These are things the media doesn't report as they don't have direct access to the players and can't hear the advice given to them when they come to you in tears as things at home or in school aren't what they should be. Give this man a chance and leave judgement until after he's had an opportunity to prove himself. At the end of the day it isn't about wins or losses. It's about the lives you've affected and believe me, Hobart High School will not regret their decision regarding this hire. I applaud the administration for this hire and look forward to logging in to nwitimes.com from time to time from sunny Florida to see the success of this young venture. Good luck Coach Hutchins! All the best, #12.
