  1. The interesting thing is that the headline is the "huge" raise for the coroner, amounting to about $20,000, but buried in the bottom of the article is a $100,000 position in the jail that, "will likely save money overall...." Raise your hand if you believe that.

  2. To give the city some credit, they bought this property to keep North Coas in town (and it worked). Doubt they could offer the Urschels the same deal. However, promises made about Public Works taking it over seem to have been more pipe dream than anything. This property also isn't exactly ideally located. The access to 49 is either a roundie or backtracking through that nightmare of intersection near Target. Valpo will continue to suffer from its geographic limitations.

  3. The new lines are actually going under the Toll Road south of Coffee Creek to serve expected expansion resulting from the new hospital. Coffee Creek has had sewer and water in place for many years.

But if you want to start talking county subsidies for communities, I am pretty sure Valpo has gotten the better end of that deal for the last 100 or so years. And you can certainly bet your bottom dollar that if Mittal, or Worthington or any other of the major employers in north Porter County were interested in moving to Valpo, your leaders would be all ears.

  4. The Times has been a big proponent of the RDA from the beginning and, thus, it would shatter too many egos to admit defeat. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that it will go after those who threaten the RDA, and blindly cite the RDA’s November 2012 report without any actual scrutiny. Just a thought, but should a credible newspaper blindly cite data in a report prepared by the RDA, which supports the RDA’s continued existence? This report is full of more holes than Swiss cheese. The alleged economic output of the RDA is based in large part of totally unreliable future projections. It is also worthy of note that when the RDA (and its PR arm the Times), say the RDA has “leveraged” $2.57 for every $1.00 of RDA investment they mean, by and large, other taxpayer dollars, including from the State and local level. So, the RDA wants to spend local and state tax dollars, to leverage other local and state tax dollars? Anyone else see the craziness in this?

And don’t ignore the report’s statement regarding integrated bus and rail service, “….the RDA continues to work toward finding a source of continued funding….” Anybody want to speculate on what that means?

  5. I have been reading your comments for several years, and you appear to have such negative opinions on every issue, most certainly including the Duneland School System. Those new subdivision to which you refer are full of both new and old families, and that fact remains completely and utterly irrelevant in terms of this issue. Fortunately, we live in a country that allows its citizens to vote for candidates and issues in the district where they reside, regardless of the longevity of residency.

You have many opinions on many issues, and I would strongly encourage you to take part in the process and get involved to help improve the world in which you live. Taking pot shots from 1,000 yards is not particular useful or productive.

  6. There is a distinct possibility that the people who are charged with managing the finances of every local taxing unit in the state (as well as the attorney general) have better things to do than deal with the Valpo in-fighting. It is time for some adults to step-up, fix this mess, and stop draining the state's resources, not to mention the amount of time the county is wasting on this.

  8. He is free to say whatever he wants, and as a public servant, he is rightly going to be criticized when he says stupid things. I expect message board commentates to say things like this, not elected officials. And if he truly doesn't know that "fruits" is slang for gay people, then I am worried about his intellectual capacity to serve.

  9. Let's be honest, the schools system could say the sky is blue right now and 100 people would line up in opposition.

This advisory group is not new news, it was part of the proposal from the beginning. I appreciate this was a close vote, but how about we give this group a chance to form or, God forbid, hold a meeting before we throw them under a bus.
