  1. The state legislators need to step up to eliminate township government and its employees. North Township inflicts the same burden on Highland/Munster that Calumet Township does on Griffith. The only reason Mrvan is upset is he doesn’t want to see the gravy train end for himself and the township commissioners.

  2. It’s utterly amazing to hear these public sector managers whine about such a small budget reduction. These are not even true cuts as the overall spending is still greater than last year. It becomes clearer everyday that government employees have no idea how to implement efficiencies and spend tax dollars wisely. All they are trying to do is make these small reductions as painful as possible to protect their bloated budgets. Then you have the ridiculous furloughs when it would be better to layoff workers and/or cut pay across the board.

  3. Part of the problem is the teachers contract which doesn’t allow merit increases for individuals, it’s everyone gets the same raise or nobody gets a raise. Public education needs to change and the days of contacts with automatic raises for all, little or no benefit co pays, step increases, pay for unused sick days with no regard to existing revenue are over. Teachers and administrators need to be paid on a merit basis out of available funds within a strict budget which doesn't mean increases every year. The key education funding issue the state legislature needs to address is to make per student funding equal, not to pour more money into an inefficient system.

  4. Unless the state legislature steps up and eliminates township government the best suggestion is to allow other towns/cities to leave existing townships. For instance in North township Highland and Munster are in a similar situation to Griffith being bleed dry by Hammond and EC.

  5. It’s not free it’s paid for using my tax dollars and it has nothing to do with poor relief. If the state isn’t going to eliminate Township government they need to put strict limits on what Townships can spend taxpayer dollars on.

  6. Look at all of these common sense savings that have been made, “Lake Ridge has contracted out food service, which went from operating in a deficit to making a profit; outsourced transportation, which resulted in an annual savings of $600,000; switched to the state plan for insurance, which saved $1 million annually; closed Ensweiler Alternative Academy, saving $500,000 annually; and rented space to Head Start, which is an annual revenue source”, that never would have been made if available revenue wasn’t reduced. Like any government agency they will spend all money available and the only way to drive efficiency is to reduce the amount of revenue available. The school district could find many more savings if they now address employee contracts and inefficient union rules.

  7. Pete you have no desire to cut spending and it’s frankly offensive that you write an article alluding that you want to reduce spending. If you are serious offer the details on one substantial cut that you propose which is a true reduction in spending from the previous year. This is probably going to confuse you Pete, but we need spending cuts (not decreases in future budgeted dollars) and not more revenue (taxes). Your unwillingness to address the deficit in a quick and decisive manner disgusts me.
